Montgomery Parks to Host Online Community Meeting on New Neighborhood Park Planned in the Lyttonsville Area

Montgomery Parks invites the public to participate in a virtual community meeting about a new neighborhood park in the Lyttonsville community of Silver Spring. The meeting will take place via Zoom on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Parks staff will present information about the proposed new park and encourage input and questions from meeting attendees.

The site is currently being used as a staging area for purple line construction and will be transferred to M-NCPPC upon completion of the Purple Line. The intent of the project is to create a neighborhood green, and a rest stop with amenities along the Capital Crescent Trail while providing environmental benefits, accessibility, and social connections.

14-Year-Old Charged with Germantown Armed Carjacking

On Friday, April 8, at approximately 7:52 p.m., 5^th District officers responded to Crystal Rock Drive for the report of an armed carjacking that just occurred.

The investigation by detectives determined that upon exiting his family’s vehicle, the victim was approached by a group of masked teenage suspects, between the ages of 15 and 18-years-old. One of the suspects who approached the victim removed a handgun from his waistband and demanded the keys to the car. The victim initially refused the suspect’s demands and they began to attack him, striking him in the head and body. An unknown female suspect took the keys from the victim’s hand and gave them to the suspect with the gun. The suspects then fled the scene in the victim’s car. Upon fleeing the scene, the suspects struck another vehicle with the stolen car.

GrillMarx Clarksburg Closes For a Week

GrillMarx in Clarksburg announced via social media earlier this week that it will be closed for a week to allow its staff to rest and recharge. The following messages were posted on social media:

The restaurant, which has additional locations in Olney and Columbia, opened in Clarksburg in 2014. Per the message, it will be reopening next week.

New Policy Bans County Payment for Travel to States With Policies That Roll Back a Woman’s Right to Choose; Full Statement From County Executive Marc Elrich

In response to the Supreme Court ruling today in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, County Executive Marc Elrich released a statement and directed Montgomery County’s Chief Administrative Officer Richard S. Madaleno to draft a new policy for County employees (with limited exceptions) that bars County payment for travel to states with policies that roll back a woman’s right to choose. The fulll statement and memo can be seen below:

“The Supreme Court ruling today jeopardizes women, rolls back fundamental rights, and, ultimately, will significantly impact the health and life of many women in our Country. This ruling turns the clock back on the progress that has been made to ensure the right of women to have an abortion. This is not about law, this is about a twisted ideology. The irony is that this decision comes one day after we celebrated Title IX and its impact on the progress of women. I am very concerned that there will be additional rollbacks from this court that will impact our rights.

Traffic: Collision Closes Southbound Lanes of Rockville Pike on Friday Afternoon

A collision has closed all southbound lanes of Rockville Pike (MD-355) at Tuckerman Lane, with northbound now down to one right lane. Drivers are to expect significant delays and advised to seek an alternate route. The collision occurred on Rockville Pike between Tuckerman Lane and Strathmore Avenue around 1:30pm on Friday afternoon.

According to Chief Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Pete Piringer, four patients were transported to the hospital, including two juveniles, all with non life-threatening injuries (one of which was Pri2 trauma.) We will post an update when more information becomes available.

Bowie Man Arrested for Attempted Carjacking in Montgomery County

At approximately 10:49 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the Shell/Dash In gas station in the 11100 block of New Hampshire Ave. for an attempted carjacking call.

The investigation by detectives determined that the adult male victim was pumping gas when the unknown suspect entered the front passenger seat of the car and began searching for property. The suspect then exited the car and began to beat the victim, and knocked him to the ground multiple times. He then demanded the victim’s car keys and ran away. The victim was transported to an area hospital for his injuries.

Westfield Wheaton (11160 Veirs Mill Rd), in partnership with Nueva Vida, will be hosting a free Summer Health Fair & Family Fun Zone this Saturday, June 25th from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the lower level Macy’s Court. Visitors can take advantage of free health screenings and resources, workout sessions, music, activities and surprises for kids and grown-up kids alike.

Who: More than 30 organizations from across the region will gather to provide resources and information including health screenings and information sessions, in collaboration with Montgomery County. A few of the organizatoins that will be on site include:

Discounted Tickets Available for County Pools for Monday, July 4

Outdoor pool hours for July 4 are 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 3-6 p.m. Tickets will be valid for the session selected and are nonrefundable. Residents can purchase up to 10 tickets. Tickets will be scanned at the door and a valid photo ID is required. The primary purchaser must present the ticket upon entry for the entire group. County Elected Officials React to the Overturning of Roe v. Wade

This morning the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that stated that women had a constitutional right to an abortion. Abortion bans are now expected in up to 26 states (not including Maryland.) Below are reactions from several Montgomery County elected officials:

“The Council stands united in the belief that a person’s right to make their own decisions about their healthcare deserves the highest level of constitutional protection, and a politicized Supreme Court should not choose to curb or restrict the constitutional rights of citizens.
