MCFRS

Yesterday we let you know of three pedestrians (two children and one adult) who suffered non-life-threatening injuries on Friday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle being driven on Gaither Rd and Piccard Dr in Rockville.

We have learned from the mother of the children involved that their nanny’s heroic effort is the reason the children did not sustain more serious injuries. We have been told that the driver of a truck was allegedly speeding and did not make a complete stop at while making a right turn, but did remain on the scene.


MCPS

Montgomery County Public Schools confirmed that the mask mandate will be addressed at the March 8th Board of Education meeting.

Last Tuesday, the Maryland State Board of Education voted 12-2  to rescind its statewide mask mandate for public schools, effective March 1. The Maryland General Assembly’s Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review Committee (AELR) met on Friday, February 25, and approved the Maryland State BOE’s decision.


Gaithersburg

Shake Shack has fenced off site of its upcoming Kentlands location as it prepares to break ground for its third location in Montgomery County.

On July 8, 2021, Shake Shack was granted approval for the construction of a 4,700 square foot building with outdoor seating as the second of three commercial infill sites totaling 16,000 square feet along Kentlands Square Place. The burger chain was granted its license to sell beer and wine on the premises during its Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) hearing on January 6th.


Bethesda

On Friday, Montgomery County officials dedicated the “MD 355 Crossing Project” in Bethesda. The new underpass provides safe crossing between the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Medical Center Metrorail station.

The underpass is named after the late Phil Alperson, a former MCDOT employee who worked for years to coordinate the project.


Damascus

Update: Montgomery County Police report that one person has died as a result of the collision.

Two vehicles collided in a head-on crash at Ridge Rd and Kings Valley Rd in Damascus on Friday around 5pm, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer.


Maryland

The Maryland House of Delegates passed a bill today that would allow voters to decide whether or not to legalize cannabis in Maryland.  House Bill 1 states that, “on or after July 1, 2023, an individual in the State who is at least 21 years old may use and possess cannabis.”

If the bill passes through the Maryland State Senate, voters will see the question on the ballot this November.


Crime

Mason Binion was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the 2008 murder of 21 year old Silver Spring resident, Michael F. Taylor.

According to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia, the murder followed a “botched drug transaction.”

Per Montgomery County:

On Monday, Feb. 28, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will be joined by Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Anita Vassallo, Montgomery County Department of General Services Director David Dise, the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs, family members of Brig. Gen. Charles E.  McGee, and others in a ceremony to sign a bill that will enable the County to rename the Silver Spring Library to the “Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library.”

Metro is installing new faregates at rail stations and will begin upgrading fareboxes on Metrobuses in the fall. This investment in new technology means a faster, more efficient and reliable experience for you. As a result, beginning March 1, 2022, SmarTrip cards purchased before 2012 will no longer work and must be replaced.

Beyond MoCo

On Thursday evening, Chef José Andrés tweeted that he was headed to Poland with his World Central Kitchen to see how they can help refugees after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Andrés founded the World Central Kitchen in 2010 with the goal of providing meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises.
