4A: (2) Quince Orchard vs (1) Flowers– The Cougars beat Broadneck 42-9 in the semifinals. RB Iverson Howard rushed for 210 yards & 2 touchdowns in the victory. WR Tavahri Groves also contributed with 129 yards of total offense and 2 touchdowns. Flowers, from PG County, defeated Wise 20-13 in their semifinal game. This will be QO’s 9th appearance in the state finals, having won 4. Flowers will be playing in their 1st state final in school history. These two squads have only played each other once prior, in 2011 they met in the state semifinal resulting in a 23-12 Quince Orchard win. Council Passes Bill to Enhance Support for Small Businesses Engaged in Research and Development

Per Montgomery County: Today the Montgomery County Council unanimously passed legislation that will fuel economic development by providing the County Executive with greater flexibility regarding the administration of the County’s program to match federal Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer grants. The legislation is sponsored by Planning, Housing and Economic Development (PHED) Committee Chair Hans Riemer and Councilmembers Will Jawando and Andrew Friedson, who sit on the PHED Committee.

Expedited Bill 31-22, Finance – Economic Development Fund – Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Matching Grant Program, alters the administration and eligibility requirements of the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Matching Grant Program, which provides funding to small businesses engaged in research and development, and amends the law regarding the program and the Economic Development Fund.

Virginia Man Finds Powerball Fortune in MoCo

Per the Maryland Lottery: He buys Powerball tickets frequently, a Virginia truck driver told lottery officials. Maryland Lottery officials, that is! It turns out that a $50,000 portion of the jackpot he’d been seeking in both states was waiting for him on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. “Like everybody else, I had been buying Powerball tickets back home as the jackpot kept getting bigger,” said the 35-year-old. The resident of Lorton, Virginia, purchased his $50,000-winning ticket back in October, more than a week before the Powerball jackpot reached its record-breaking total of $2.04 billion.

Detectives Investigating Armed Robbery of 7-Eleven; Surveillance Video of Suspects Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a commercial armed robbery that occurred on Monday, November 14, 2022, at a 7-Eleven in Silver Spring. Detectives have released surveillance video of the male suspects and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying them. At approximately 3:44 a.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 10200 block of New Hampshire Ave. for the report of a robbery. The preliminary investigation by detectives has revealed that two masked suspects entered the business. One suspect produced a handgun, announced the robbery and ordered the employee to the floor. The same suspect then ripped the cash drawer from the register and both suspects left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.

The first suspect is described as a Black male, 20-30 years old, 5-feet, 9-inches tall, with a slim build. He was wearing all black clothing and Nike sneakers. The second suspect is described as a Black male, 20-30 years old, 5-feet, 9-inches tall, with a heavy build. He was wearing a black hoodie and camouflage pants.

MoCo Resident Claims $50,004 Powerball Prize from Historic Drawing

Per the Maryland Lottery: A Takoma Park man who purchased a Powerball ticket in the historic Nov. 7 drawing came up $50,004 richer, missing the $2.04 billion jackpot win by only one number. The 70-year-old came into Maryland Lottery headquarters with a great big smile and left still thinking about how he would spend his prize. He was one of eight Marylanders who won third-tier prizes in the drawing, which also generated a $1 million prize for another player in the state.

His lucky Lottery retailer was Check Cash Depot #004 located at 8476 Piney Branch Road in Silver Spring. There’s still time to get tickets for the next Powerball drawing on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The estimated jackpot annuity is $65 million with an estimated cash value of $33.7 million.

Council Passes Maryland’s First Comprehensive Building Decarbonization Legislation; Bill Would Require New Construction to Use 100 Percent Electric Energy Equipment Beginning in 2026

Per Montgomery County: The Montgomery County Council voted unanimously today to pass Bill 13-22, Buildings – Comprehensive Building Decarbonization, which will require the County Executive to issue all-electric building standards for new construction by Dec. 31, 2026. The legislation, introduced by Councilmember Hans Riemer and cosponsored by Councilmember Will Jawando, is the first of its kind in Maryland.

“This legislation, combined with cleaning up the electricity grid and retrofitting existing buildings, will bend the curve on emissions from our building sector, which produce over 50 percent of our total emissions,” said Councilmember Riemer. “Fully electric buildings are less costly to operate over the life cycle of the building and healthier for indoor air quality since they do not produce carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide as byproducts, pollutants that have been shown to contribute to asthma in children and disproportionately affect communities of color. Montgomery County will now be a national leader in the push for electrification as a solution for climate change.”

Sally Beauty to Close Olney Location Permanently

Sally Beauty Supply will close its Olney store (18394 Village Mart Dr), located at Olney Village Center, on Thursday, December 9th, according to a representative we spoke to earlier today.

The Texas-based retail chain will be closing 350 of its stores by the end of this year. The company operates 4,500 stores in the US and as of now we have only heard of this location and the Germantown location closing in Montgomery County. There is no word on a replacement at this time. MCPD Holiday Alcohol Task Force Arrest 32 People for DUI During Week 3 of Enforcement

Per MCPD: Members of the Montgomery County Police Alcohol Holiday Task Force will be devoting their full time and attention to detecting alcohol-related offenses this holiday season. During the week of November 23, 24, 25, 26, and 27, task force officers arrested 32 people for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs (DUI).

Detectives Investigate Taco Bell/Kentucky Fried Chicken Armed Robbery; Surveillance Video Released

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a commercial armed robbery that occurred on Thursday, November 10, 2022, at a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in Takoma Park. Detectives have released surveillance video of the male suspect and are asking for the public’s assistance in identifying him.

At approximately 7:29 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 7700 block of Blair Rd. for the report of a robbery. The preliminary investigation by detectives has revealed that the suspect entered the restaurant, displayed a firearm and demanded money. The employee complied with the suspect’s demands. The suspect left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
