Stedwick Elementary School Hosts First Family Wellness Night

Last week, on January 31st, Stedwick Elementary School hosted its first Family Wellness Night. Joseph Grundy, the current PE teacher, and Grecia Albarracin, the community school liaison, collaborated to bring the best resources and activities to Stedwick families.

The school partnered with various organizations and groups for a successful night promoting a healthy lifestyle. Activities included karate classes by Master Method Karate, K-POP dance lessons by the dance team NOVA from Watkins Mill High School (WMHS), Latin dance classes by JUNTOS from Quince Orchard High School, personal training sessions by Keep in Movin’, Restorative Justice coaches for mindfulness, MCFRS for CPR classes, ambulance and firetruck tours, feeling wheels provided by WMHS counselors, furry friends brought by Fidos and Freedom, stress coping techniques taught by Mind Matters Practice, and cooking class information presented by the WMHS Hospitality and Tourism Class.

This event was an initiative to promote mental, physical, and healthy lifestyle choices, aiming to bring resources covering healthy eating, working out, and mental health. Additionally, we sought to foster early relationships with feeder schools such as Watkins Mill High School, with counselors present to connect with students and families.

Mr. Michael Brown, the hospitality and tourism teacher at WMHS, provided resources to connect families with future cooking and hospitality classes, aiming to excite both parents and students about high school opportunities. “This event served to tie wellness initiatives with community-building efforts, strengthening ties within our school community.” said Grecia Albarracin. “Thank you to all who contributed to making this event a success!”
