Lenscrafters to Open Two New MoCo Locations

Lenscrafters will be opening two new MoCo locations in the coming months, with new locations coming to Pike & Rose and Rio. The eyewear retailer has posted signage at both locations indicating they are “coming soon.”

LensCrafters offers eye exams and sells prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contact lenses. “Customers can expect to find innovative technology, the newest styles, and unparalleled personalized service. They offer a wide range of prescription lenses for eyeglasses and sunglasses, perfectly tailored to your lifestyle.”

Light Ice a Possibility Thursday Into Friday

Today we enjoyed temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s, giving the area a taste of spring. Temperatures are expected to crash overnight, dropping to/around the freezing mark mid-morning Thursday morning. Highs tomorrow will likely be around 35 degrees with temperatures hovering around freezing again Thursday night when the precipitation begins and go back up to about 35 degrees in the morning. Right now, temperatures don’t support much ice, but it’s still possible things are a little cooler than expected.

The most recent map from the National Weather Service, seen in our featured photo, shows almost all of MoCo getting a trace of ice with a sprinkle of northern areas getting up to a tenth of an inch.

Group to Hold Rally Tomorrow in Support of Police-Free Schools, Restorative Justice, and Mental Health Support for Students

A group known as Young People For Progress will hold a rally at 4:30pm tomorrow (Thursday, February 24th) outside of the Montgomery County Board of Education meeting at the Carver Educational Services Center on Hungerford Drive. The goal of the rally is to urge MCPS Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight and school board members to support police-free schools, restorative justice, and more mental health support for students as the most effective way support student wellbeing and safety, according to a press release.

The Board of Education is holding a meeting tomorrow, Thursday, February 24th. The business meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m., and closed session will begin at 1:00 p.m. The meeting will be broadcast live on Comcast Channel 34, Verizon FIOS Channel 36, and RCN Channel 89. Meeting is rebroadcast at 1:00 p.m. on the Saturday and Sunday following the meeting.

Washington Commanders Change Crest After Backlash

When Washington announced the team’s new name earlier this month, many were already privy to the fact that the name would be Commanders.

While many would complain about any new name chosen, the team admitted to making a mistake with the crest that debuted alone with the new name– the Super Bowl years on the perimeter of the crest reflected the year the game was played and not the year of the actual NFL season, as seen below:

Black History: African-Americans in MoCo Before the Civil War

The following comes from PLACES from the PAST: The Tradition of Gardez Bien in Montgomery County, Maryland by Clare Lise Kelly (M-NCPPC):

Though local tobacco plantations were small in scale compared to the large estates of the Deep South, they relied nonetheless on labor of enslaved people. In 1790, enslaved people were one-third the entire population in Montgomery County. The number of slaves exceeded that in Frederick County to the north (12%), but was not as large as its southern neighbor, Prince George’s County (52%). There were five times more slaves than free Blacks here in the 1840s-50s. The travesty of one person owning another and brutal treatment of enslaved people were realities of the county’s first 150 years.

Bethesda: Halfsmoke to Open Montgomery Mall Location

Back in August of 2020 we let you know that HalfSmoke would be opening a Rockville location in Rockville Town Square. Though it hasn’t opened yet, it’s still in the plans for the DC-based restaurant.

Now we know of a new location, HalfSmoke Bethesda, which will be opening in the Montgomery Mall food court, as first reported by The MoCo Source on Instagram. It will be located in the former home of Coldstone Creamery and more recently Gelato Galaxy.

Three Fires Across The County Overnight Leave Families Displaced

Three fires that have left two separate families displaced occurred overnight, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer. The fires occurred in Takoma Park, Germantown, and a Chevy Chase. There were no injuries reported in any of the fires.

The first was a 2-alarm fire at 7401 New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park at the Hampshire Tower apartments. One family consisting of two children and two adults was displaced, and there was approximately $25k in damages. No word on the cause of the fire.

MoCo in “Slight Winter Storm Threat” Category for Thursday Into Friday

The National Weather Service has Montgomery County in the “Slight Winter Storm Threat” category for potential winter weather Thursday into Friday.

As of now, not much is expected for Montgomery County, with the threat of ice accumulation staying north for the most part. As you can see in the map below, some of the yellow goes into MoCo with Damascus possible having to deal with very light ice (one hundredth of an inch).

MCPS: Stonegate Elementary School Replacement (Demolition/Rendering)

Stonegate Elementary School students are now attending school at North Lake Center on Bauer Drive in Aspen Hill, approximately 7.2 miles away from the elementary school. Construction began over winter break and the old building was recently demolished.

For years, planners and school district officials have been at odds over the design of new schools due to parking lots and bus loops at the front of the building, “separating the building from the community”, according to a report by Caitlynn Peetz.
