Early in July we let you know that Tiger Sugar, a boba/bubble tea spot known for is brown sugar bubble tea with unique “tiger stripe” design, would be coming to Rockville. 

The Grand Opening event will take place this Saturday, August 28th and the first 100 orders will receive free Tiger Sugar merchandise.


Burtonsville

Dave Golden, founder and moderator of the Burtonsville 2.0 Facebook group, had a call with real estate development company EDENS regarding Burtonsville Crossing. Below you’ll see the notes from his phone call:

• There has been quite a bit of work and focus on Burtonsville Crossing with a lens towards post-COVID development. David and Kristy have been working on it personally for several months.


Poolesville

Per the Town of Poolesville: 

The Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce that a new Town Manager has been hired to lead the municipality’s management and operations. Seasoned municipal official Tony Tomasello will serve as Town Manager, effective August 30, 2021. Tomasello was selected from a group of candidates who applied during the recent recruitment process, which was coordinated and conducted by the Town’s Commissioners.


North Bethesda

Tipico Dominicano, which started as a food truck on New Hampshire Avenue in Takoma Park and Georgia Avenue in Wheaton, has taken over the recently closed Flor De Luna location at 11417 Woodglen Drive in Rockville.

The restaurant offers Dominican specialties like picadera (finger foods you can eat with your hands), salami frito (fried salami), queso frito (fried cheese), chicken/cheese/beef pastelitos, and more.


Bethesda

Earlier this month ThinkFoodGroup restaurants in the D.C. region require proof of vaccination to dine indoors for people who are 12 and older.

This includes Spanish Diner, which opened in Bethesda this past May in the location that was formerly home to Jaleo.


Education

The Board of Education will hold its business meeting (in-person) on Tuesday, August 24, 2021. Closed session will begin at 9 a.m. Public agenda items will begin at 12 p.m. The meeting will be broadcast live on Comcast Channel 34, Verizon Channel 36, and RCN channel 89.

The Board will resume in-person testimony at its August 24 business meeting, but will continue to accept pre-recorded audio or video testimony through their website.


Beyond MoCo

The Washington Football Team has released third year wide receiver Steven Sims, as reported by JP Finlay of NBC Sports.

Sims started four games over the last two seasons, serving primarily as the team’s slot receiver. Sims has caught 61 balls for 575 yards and five touchdowns in his two year career here in Washington.


Gaithersburg

Per the City of GaithersburgCensus data shows that the City of Gaithersburg population grew just over 16% in the past 10 years. Census data shows that the City of Gaithersburg population grew just over 16% in the past 10 years. The official 2020 population is 69,657, compared to 59,933 in 2010. Gaithersburg is now the third largest City in Maryland, behind Baltimore at 585,708, and the City of Frederick at 78,171. There are other unincorporated areas in Maryland that have higher population, including MoCo’s very own Germantown and Silver Spring.

Gaithersburg has also grown in diversity in the past decade. The Hispanic/Latino of any race percentage now stands at 28.5%, up from 24.2% in 2010. The White not Hispanic/Latino population is now at 31.5%, down from 40.0% in 2010. The Asian not Hispanic/Latino population in Gaithersburg is 19.0%, up from 16.9% in 2010, while the Black/African American not Hispanic/Latino population stands at 16.1%, up from 15.5% in 2010. The largest change occurred in those reporting multiple races, which increased from 4.8% in 2010 to 11.4% in 2020.
