Education

The City of Rockville will be providing Certificates of Recognition to the 2022 Woodley Robotics Team. The 2022 Woodley Robotics team was the one team selected to represent Maryland at the First Lego League Competition at the World Festival in Houston, Texas in April of 2022. The team has been competing in the First Lego League Challenge throughout the 2022 season. There were 108 teams (from 51 countries) competing from all over the world. The team had some issues with their robot; however, they kept going and correcting and trying new things. The team received a score of 520 on their last run, that ranked them at #21 overall in the robot games portion of the competition. The competition also included presentations to a panel of 4 judges on their Innovation Project, Robot Design and Core Values, as well as answering questions asked by the judges in the 40 minutes interview round.

26 trophies were awarded, and many great teams did not go home with one; however, the Woodley Robotics team received the “Breakthrough Award,” which is a special judges’ award based on how the team performed overall in all of the categories (Innovation Project, Robot Design, and Core Values). The Woodley Robotics team put in a lot of hard work, long hours and dedication to their Robotics project. The team consists of Head Coach Phil Johnson, Assistant Coach Karen Folkart, Team Members Charlotte Cornman, Jordyn Folkart, Brynn Johnson, Caroline Murphy, and  Stella Newhouse.


Darnestown

Updated to include letter sent home to the Travila ES community

Travilah Elementary School, located at 13801 Dufief Mill Rd. in North Potomac, was in a brief lockdown this afternoon following a domestic incident between two people that are not associated with the school community.


MCPS

1. (LW 1) Quince Orchard: The Cougars shutout South County from Virginia 33-0.  Running Back Iverson Howard ran for 2 Touchdowns in the victory.  Quince Orchard will host Gaithersburg this Friday.

2. (LW 2) Damascus: The Swarmin’ Hornets defeated Einstein 44-12. As a team Damascus rushed for 191 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Damascus will travel to the Black Hole in Germantown to take on Northwest in the MoCoShow Game of the Week!


Crime

Per the Office of the Montgomery County State’s Attorney: “Today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County, MD, the Honorable Michael McAuliffe sentenced defendant, Charles Ewald, 37, of Knoxville, MD, to 15 years in prison suspend all but five years to serve and five years of supervised probation upon release.

Ewald pleaded guilty on May 18th, 2023 to charges of felony theft scheme having a value of over $100,000 and misdemeanor misconduct in office. He stole approximately $324,500 from the Montgomery County Public Schools Department of Transportation between at least 2016 and 2021 while he was working there in the role of Assistant Director.


Boyds

Old Glory DC is the first professional rugby team based in the Washington metropolitan area and this year it’ll be playing its home games right here in Montgomery County. Old Glory DC competes in Major League Rugby (MLR), a professional rugby union league competing in its sixth season in 2023, representing North America’s highest level of rugby competition. Since its inaugural season in 2018, MLR has grown from seven to 13 teams, featuring 12 from the United States and one from Canada.

Per the team: Old Glory DC is excited to announce that all 2024 home regular season and playoff matches will be played at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, MD. Entering its sixth season and following an exceptional Championship Series playoff berth and a first-ever Eastern Conference Championship appearance, Old Glory aims to continue its success with rugby fans, supporters, and sponsors throughout the DMV region.


Crime

The FREE wheel locks are open to ALL Montgomery County Residents – criteria: Takoma Park Police have FREE anti-theft steering wheel locks to help prevent vehicle thefts.  Montgomery County residents can receive one free steering wheel lock per vehicle, while supplies last.


Gaithersburg

Gaithersburg City staff is supportive of the annexation petition that would annex the Walnut Hill Shopping Center into the City of Gaithersburg. Granite Partners submitted Annexation Petition X-9510-2023, proposing to annex three parcels that currently abut the City boundary, along with a portion of the North Westland Drive right of way.  The Annexation Plan proposes several changes to the existing Walnut Hill Shopping Center, including constructing a new freestanding convenience store with accessory gasoline pumps, demolishing an existing small freestanding building on the south side of the property, renovating the exterior of the main shopping center building, and making improvements to the parking lot and landscaping.

Gaithersburg Staff recommends that the Mayor and City Council hold their record open until 5:00 p.m., September 29, 2023, with anticipated Policy Discussion and Final Action on October 16th. This action was confirmed at last night’s meeting. Below you’ll see a few photos of what Granite Partners has planned for the shopping center, including a new Aldi grocery store and Sheetz gas station/convenience store.


Montgomery College

Montgomery College (MC) welcomed three new Board of Trustees members in July. The Board of Trustees of Montgomery College is the institution’s legal governing body and is comprised of 10 community individuals who are appointed by the governor. The new Trustees are Dr. Sheryl Brissett Chapman, Dr. Judith Docca, and MC student Rishi Nixon.

Trustee Sheryl Brissett Chapman: For 30 years, Dr. Brissett Chapman has served as the executive director of the National Center for Children and Families. Trustee Brissett Chapman, an expert on child and family welfare issues, publishes and presents on a wide range of topics. She has been involved in numerous organizations including Maryland’s Council for the Procurement of Health, Educational & Social Services, the Maryland Procurement Improvement Council, the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence’s Fatality Committee, the Congressional Research Institute for Social Work Policy Board, Maryland Nonprofit, the National Association of Social Workers, and the Maryland Association of Resources for Families and Youth. Governor Wes Moore appointed Dr. Brissett Chapman to a six-year term on the Board of Trustees.


DC Sports

Jamison Crowder was picked by Washington in the fourth round with the 105th overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft. Now, Crowder will return to the team after signing to the practice squad, according to the Washington Post’s Nicki Jhabvala.

Crowder played four seasons in Washington, catching over 200 passes in that time, before moving on to sign with the New York Jets. While with the Jets he had the best season of his career in terms of receptions, with 78 in 2019. Crowder stayed with the Jets until 2021 and played for the Bills last season. He provides quality receiver depth on the practice squad and has previous experience returning punts as well.


DMV

Per the National Weather Service: “A Heat Advisory is in effect for much of the area this afternoon. Record heat is once again possible today. Drink plenty of fluids today and take plenty of breaks. Be sure to know the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.” The advisory begins at noon and lasts until 7pm today (Wednesday, September 6).

Montgomery County officials have also issued an Hyperthermia Alert and urge residents to take precautions to protect themselves, and their loved ones, against heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. A Hyperthermia Alert is issued for the County when forecasted temperatures, and/or heat index, in at least part of the County is at least 95 degrees or higher creating a hazardous situation in which heat-stroke and heat exhaustion are likely.
