MoCoShow Game of the Week: Sherwood (3-2) at Damascus (4-1): Warriors have lost two in a row. They could legitimately finish the regular season 4-5. Damascus has done a good job getting to 4-1. They’ve won big all 4 times so far, but it’s typically been a 4 quarter effort and the scores have often been in the 14-7 and even 7-6 range in the second quarter. If Sherwood is able to put together a big first quarter with multiple scores, the Hornets will be in trouble. Sherwood has been a pretty frustrating team so far offensively. If Coach Fields is able to iron the mistakes out of the Warriors and get them back in a winning mindset, I think they overwhelm Damascus. But if the Warriors have a losing mentality, then Damascus may just as easily light them up..  Prediction:   Sherwood by 9

Northwest (5-0) at Paint Branch (3-2): Northwest looked very mortal against BCC and the Panthers, who were looking like distant longshots last week, may just have a shot if they can find a way to apply the film. One might think the Panthers’ defense, which has been performing consistently well in spite of the gloom, might be able to do what the Barons defense did. Could this, of all years, be the year PB gets that long sought after first ever win vs. the Jags?  WJ was able to gash PB on the ground, and NW’s offense has the personnel to run a similar attack between dual threat QB David Davis, a plethora of speedy rushers and a huge O-Line.  Prediction: Northwest by 15

Seneca Valley (3-2) at Quince Orchard (5-0): SV’s got a little mojo back after boat racing RM. Unfortunately, handling the Rockets in the trenches is not a particularly notable accomplishment and SV will likely be in for a world of hurt against QO.  Prediction:   QO by 35

Blair (2-3) at Walter Johnson (5-0): Blair’s is trying to figure out their offense as they try to compete in the 4A North. WJ’s D has been nasty though and will be a very steep hurdle for the Blazers. Provided the offense keeps chugging along, WJ should extend their historic start. Prediction: WJ by 14

Richard Montgomery (2-3) at Rockville (2-3): Rivalry game! After rattling off 6 straight wins from 2015-2021, RM was upset by a feisty Rockville squad last year. Both teams should come into this one hungry, with RM having been battle tested and Rockville coming off 2 straight wins looking to get back to .500. While neither team will be contenders, both pack enough weapons that this should be a good one, perhaps even a shootout. Against Anthony Dixon Jr, the Rams defense had better sharpen up fast or it’s gonna be an aerial assault in the woods.  Prediction:   RM by 13

Churchill (4-1) at Whitman (3-2): 3-2! We anticipated improvement from Whitman this year but they have surpassed all expectations, Unfortunately, Churchill will be too talented for Whitman to hang with, but hopefully we will see another spirited effort.  Prediction:   Churchill by 21

Watkins Mill (1-4) at Blake (5-0): The historic start will continue and Blake may be tempted to start thinking about next week’s matchup a bit earlier than they should.  Prediction:   Blake by 42

Gaithersburg (4-1) at Magruder (3-2): Potentially a competitive one. If Gburg is as locked and loaded as they were against Sherwood they should pull away and clinch their first winning record in a decade, but Magruder will make them sweat if they aren’t. The Colonels will want to win this one bad but Gburg is too talented for them. Prediction: Gaithersburg by 24
Wheaton (1-4) at BCC (2-3): BCC ain’t your usual 2-3 team. No doubt the Barons will be looking to blow off some steam this week against a very vulnerable opponent. Prediction: BCC by 50
Clarksburg (2-3) at Wootton (2-3): An intriguing matchup. Wootton’s defense came to play against a good WJ team last week. Clarksburg’s win showed continued strides from the Coyotes. Overall Wootton has looked a bit more impressive, but we won’t be surprised if Clarksburg keeps it close especially if their defense can keep the Patriots’ poor offense in check. Prediction: Wootton by 6
Boonsboro (3-2) at Poolesville (0-5): Boonsboro’s 3 wins are against Catoctin (by 4), Liberty (by 14) & Williamsport (by 29). They lost by 10 to a decent Middletown team and by 17 to a pretty good Brunswick squad. Overall Boonsboro should be good enough to beat Poolesville – though we will say, the Falcons have steadily been showing more of a pulse on offense lately. This will be the fifth meeting between the two schools, as they previously scheduled each other in the ’07-’08 and ’13-’14 rotations; Boonsboro has won all four prior meetings.Prediction: Boonsboro by 14

Urbana is 3-1. They played a very good Middletown team in Delaware and lost which wasn’t unexpected. They edged out a Middletown-MD team which is looking like the weakest Middletown team in years (admittedly the Knights have played admirably so far). They had a decent 28-0 win over TJ. Then last week they went into DC and outlasted Ballou in a 37-34 shootout. Based on their other results, Ballou looks like an average team in DC. It’s definitely been an interesting schedule for the Hawks, and one that’s tough to gauge based on final scores alone. We’ve been hunting for film but it’s been hard to come by; NFHS only has tape from the Middletown-DE and TJ games and we are much more interested in seeing how Urbana looked against the other two teams.

Urbana appears to be predominantly a rushing offense. The QB looks like a decent passer but can contribute to the ground game with his legs. This is good news for a Churchill defense coming off a pretty impressive performance against QO and Iverson Howard, which forced the Cougars to air it out more to score. Alas for Urbana, Keegan Johnson is gone. On the flip side, David Avit has not disappointed whatsoever in regards to his preseason hype, currently sitting at 4th on the state rushing yards leaderboard, tops in MoCo. Even against QO’s ferocious defense he clawed his way to 73 yards on the ground and made some big plays as a receiver too. Perhaps Middletown-DE has a comparable player or two, but it’s looking like he’ll be the best player the Hawks D will line up against at this point in the season. Overall, provided Churchill plays up to their potential, I see the ingredients shaking out for them to pull out a statement win. Prediction: Churchill by 21

Sherwood (3-1) at Gaithersburg (3-1): In-county, this looks to be the most competitive high-level match. After playing each other every year from 2002 to 2014, these two teams square off once again after a 9 year hiatus. It will be a matchup of two top MoCo running backs in Gideon Ituka vs. Van Mahoney. Whoever can generate the most offense outside of their bellcow will likely walk away the winner. Don’t underestimate Gburg, aside from an expected blowout loss to QO they’ve taken care of business against opponents you’d expect a good team to easily handle, and are surely hungry for a statement win. I see this being a pretty tight affair with lots of scoring, but right now I think Sherwood gets the edge based on their earlier schedule being tougher, more proven defense and desire to bounce back from the Blake loss. Prediction: Sherwood by 13

Richard Montgomery (2-2) at Seneca Valley (2-2): A somewhat intriguing matchup that pits strength against strength: RM’s high-flying offense vs. SV’s ferocious defense. SV has some ballhawks that we expect will generate several turnovers and possibly rival the offense in terms of scoring output. Prediction: Seneca Valley by 17

Quince Orchard (4-0) at Blair (2-2): Last week showed that Blair’s offense has taken a step back from last year. Against QO’s defense, it won’t be pretty.  Prediction: QO by 45

BCC (2-2) at Northwest (4-0): Can Carson Griffey and co. test NW’s defense? The Barons will definitely look to catch the Jags off guard the way RM did, but something tells me NW won’t be so accommodating this go around.  Prediction:  Northwest by 35

Walter Johnson (4-0) at Wootton (2-2): Wootton has come back down to Earth after starting 2-0; they’re a lot better than past years for sure. Unfortunately for them, WJ has proven itself. Barring lapses in play from the high of beating Paint Branch, the Wildcats should beat the Patriots.  Prediction:  WJ by 29

Magruder (3-1) at Damascus (3-1): Magruder’s 3-1 record is a testament to Coach Fowle’s ability to field a regularly competitive squad. Damascus will be a stiff challenge to the Colonels, but perhaps not as stiff as years past given the Hornets’ lack of depth. Damascus is more talented though and we like them to win comfortably, but could see Magruder hanging around for a bit.  Prediction: Damascus by 28

Blake (4-0) at Springbrook (0-4): What a win for the Bengals to vault into the Top 5. They reached their first 4-0 record ever, and we know they will be hungry to extend history to 5-0.  Prediction: Blake by 22

Paint Branch (2-2) at Wheaton (1-3): Last week showed that PB’s offensive issues against Sherwood were unfortunately not a fluke and that the Panthers need to figure a lot of things out on offense if they want to make any noise. With Northwest coming to town next week, the situation is all the more dire. They should get back on track this week vs the Knights.  Prediction: Paint Branch by 48

Whitman (2-2) at Einstein (2-2): Both schools had huge wins last week and will be looking to keep the train rolling. We are expecting a hard-nosed, competitive bout this week. Could definitely see Whitman pulling this off but Einstein we feel has the better resume.  Prediction: Einstein by 5

Poolesville (0-4) at Rockville (1-3): Poolesville has had a bit more of a pulse the last couple weeks, they did manage to get the first score against Damascus before the Hornets took over from there. Rockville had a tough win over Springbrook last week, so now’s the chance to see if the Falcons can pose a threat to them. Even if they do, though, Rockville should be good enough to handle it.  Prediction: Rockville by 13

Clarksburg (1-3) at Watkins Mill (1-3): Both programs have improved this year after going winless in ’22. Clarksburg has improved more though, almost pulling off the win over Magruder last week, so this should be the Coyotes’ to lose.  Prediction: Clarksburg by 29.

Kennedy (0-4) at Northwood (0-4): With Whitman and WM having broken their streaks, Northwood is the last remaining team to have not won a game since the pandemic, having last won in the Spring ’21 showcase. This is by far their best chance to break the streak this season, Kennedy is back to square one after years of steady improvement under Brandon Driver and the Cavs haven’t scored a point yet this season. Additionally, the Gladiators have been showing more of a pulse since losing PB in the opener. We think they pull it off and the last of the big losing streaks will be broken!  Prediction:  Northwood by 8.

8. (LW 7) Paint Branch 2-2: The Panthers lost a tough game to Walter Johnson 22-7. Quarterback Christopher Kriz had 94 All-purpose yards and 1 Touchdown in the loss. Paint Branch will travel to Wheaton next.

Walter Johnson (3-0) at Paint Branch (2-1):  WJ has taken big steps over the last 4 years and this is a great opportunity for the Wildcats to prove themselves and stake a claim for the top seed in the 4A North. Meanwhile PB will be looking for a statement win after falling short against Sherwood. Prediction: Paint Branch by 3

Northwest (3-0) at Seneca Valley (2-1): If our research is correct, the King’s Trophy head to head is currently tied, on the back of 6 straight wins by Northwest. The Jags will look to claim the long-awaited lead in the series and will be strongly favored to win their 7th in a row. SV’s defense may be able to keep the Jags in check for a bit, but it’ll be on the Eagles’ offense to make this a game. Prediction Northwest by 24

Blake (3-0) at Sherwood (3-0): Congratulations to the Bengals on starting 3-0 for the first time ever! It was a bit expected given the level of competition they’ve played so far, but also a testament to their growth under Coach Marshall. Sherwood will be a big step up for the Bengals, but this should be a good one – Blake tends to play the Warriors tough, and nearly pulled off the comeback upset last year, only to fall on a walk-off Hail Mary. However, Sherwood has exceeded expectations so far this year and based on their performances along with Blake’s not particularly impressive win over Einstein, think they show the Bengals that there’s still a ways to climb. Prediction Sherwood 28 by 11

Quince Orchard (3-0) at Churchill (3-0): After 9 years we’ll finally get former QO Coach Dave Mac vs. QO! As he returns to MoCo as the Bulldog Offensive Coordinator. Not all 3-0 records are created equal. No doubt every coach in the county is gonna be poring over the Stone Bridge tape to see if they can exploit any Cougar weaknesses, but most won’t have the horses to do it. Churchill will try with star running back David Avit.  Prediction QO by 31

Damascus (2-1) at Poolesville (0-3): A collision of the county’s smallest schools, both of which are young and lean. However, Damascus’ definition of that is wildly different from Poolesville’s. Prediction Damascus by 38
Wootton (2-1) at Gaithersburg (2-1): A low-key solid matchup. Wootton got sent back down to earth last week against rival Churchill. They’ll have to lick their wounds quickly because they’re going to a Gburg squad anxious to make noise. It’ll be Gideon Ituka vs. Wootton’s stout defense. Gburg’s defense seems to be solid enough, so we like Ituka in this one. Prediction Gaithersburg by 12
Blair (2-1) at Einstein (1-2): Another low-key good matchup. A bit tough to pin both squads yet: they’re both solidly below the elite tier, but solidly above the basement. A step down for Blair and a step up for Einstein compared to last year. Are they equals now? We like the Blazers to pull it out. Prediction Blair by 2
Rockville (0-3) at Springbrook (0-3): A tough early season slate has both looking for their first win. Rockville didn’t do too bad against Sherwood and an undermanned Damascus squad, so we like them over a Springbrook team that has had more struggles against lower quality opponents. Prediction Rockville by 18
Magruder (2-1) at Clarksburg (1-2): A solid game that has the potential to be close. Magruder tends to win these sorts of matchups, so I’ll go with the Colonels here. Prediction Magruder by 7
Kennedy (0-3) at BCC (1-2): Barons get back to .500 with ease. Prediction BCC by 38
Northwood (0-3) at Richard Montgomery (1-2): RM’s offense looked pretty good against Northwest. . Prediction RM by 45

Watkins Mill (0-3) at Wheaton (1-2): And here’s a potentially competitive  matchup. Watkins Mill is looking to win its first game since Week 9 of 2019. It has been a rough start for the ‘Rines who have yet to score a single point so far. But Wheaton is not too far above them and had a pretty close affair against Northwood. Prediction Watkins Mill by 2
Thomas Johnson (1-2) at Whitman (1-2):  TJ’s win over North Hagerstown was more impressive than Whitman’s win over Northwood. Rooting for Whitman, but we got a feeling TJ will be just one step ahead. Prediction TJ by 13
