The March 17 event at the Limerick Pub will include food, music and dancing. More information about the events at The Pub can be found at https://www.thelimerickpub.net/. The March 18 event will include music, food, arts and crafts, face painting, balloon art and games. Food will be provided at the March 18 event (while supplies last). The Limerick Pub will provide free food samples and Green Plate Catering will be distributing shamrock sugar cookies for cookie decorating.


Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, in the 1700 block of Hampshire Green Ln.  At approximately 9:02 p.m., 3rd district officers responded to the location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from apparent gunshots wounds and provided life saving measures until Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel arrived. The victim, 20-year-old Walter Woods, of Takoma Park, was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Washington, D.C., where an autopsy will be conducted to officially determine the cause and manner of death.  Currently, there is no one in custody. This is an active and ongoing investigation.


MoCo Government

Per Montgomery County: Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, Councilmember Kristin Mink, with the support of County Executive Marc Elrich, introduced the Housing Opportunity, Mobility, and Equity (HOME) Act during the Council session on Tuesday, March 7. Community organizations, landlords and renters joined the Councilmembers and County Executive for a press conference introducing the HOME Act. They highlighted the costly impacts of renting in the County and how the bill would help relieve hundreds of thousands of renters.

“Housing is a human right. Affordable housing is not a nice to have but a necessity for renters to be able to live and contribute to our communities,” said Councilmember Jawando. “One-third of our County residents are renters, and most are Black. 58 percent of Black households rent, double the percentage of White or Asian households. With inflationary concerns, we must provide stable housing for residents.”


Gaithersburg

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 32-year-old from Gaithersburg. Hakeem Saud Morris was last seen on Friday, February 3, 2023, at approximately 7 a.m., leaving his residence in Gaithersburg.

Hakeem is 6-feet tall and weighs 180 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes. Police and family are concerned for his welfare. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Hakeem Saud Morris is asked to call the police non-emergency number at (301) 279-8000. Callers may remain anonymous.


North Bethesda

Per MCPD: A Rockville man has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on charges related to a fatal collision that occurred on Sunday, August 14, 2022. The investigation revealed that 21-year-old Kevin Saul Orihuela was under the influence of alcohol and was driving a 2019 Audi A4 eastbound on Josiah Henson Parkway at a high rate of speed prior to the collision.

At approximately 4:12 p.m., Orihuela struck a 2014 Ford Fusion driven by 62-year-old Noel Henry Powell of Germantown. Powell was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the collision. The charges against Orihuela include grossly negligent manslaughter by vehicle, homicide under the influence of alcohol, homicide under the influence of alcohol per se, and homicide while impaired by alcohol.


Olney

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Investigations Division (SID) and Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) have arrested and charged 22-year-old Erik Calderon Pereira, of Olney, with third-degree sexual offense and sexual solicitation of a minor for engaging in illicit sex acts with a minor between December 2021 and February 2023. Detectives have released a photo of the suspect, Calderon, and are asking any victims to come forward.

In January 2023, detectives initiated an investigation after receiving a complaint about a 15-year-old juvenile female who had allegedly been given drugs in exchange for illicit sex acts.  Through the investigation, detectives identified Calderon as the suspect and determined that he gave drugs several times to the 15-year-old juvenile female who would in return preformed illicit sex acts on him.  On Monday, February 27, 2023, an arrest warrant was obtained for Calderon.  On Tuesday, February 28, 2023, Calderon was arrested in Olney and transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was released on a $20,000 unsecured personal bond.


Silver Spring

One person has died following a shooting Tuesday night near the Avery Park Apartments on Hampshire Green Lane in Silver Spring, on the border of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Gaithersburg

Police responded to reports of shots fired on Tuesday afternoon in Gaithersburg. According to Gaithersburg Police, “On Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at approximately 2:47 p.m., officers from the Gaithersburg Police Department, Montgomery County Police – 6th District and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 500 block of S. Frederick Avenue for the report of shooting that just occurred. Preliminary investigation revealed that a group of unknown individuals were at the pavilion located to the rear of the Water Park when a shooting occurred. At this time, there are no victims of a shooting and there is no suspect information. This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”

Gaithersburg High School was briefly placed under a shelter-in-place around 3pm (the incident occurred after school had been dismissed and the majority of students had already left.) Earlier on Tuesday, five schools in Montgomery Village were placed in a shelter-in-place after Montgomery County Police responded to the 9900 block of Lake Landing Rd. in Montgomery Village around 12:30pm and located two males that were suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. A suspect in connection to the Montgomery Village shooting is currently in custody.
