Board of Education Proclaims October 2021 as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Montgomery County Public Schools

The Montgomery County Board of Education proclaimed October to be National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in MCPS at this evening’s meeting. Read the recognition below:

ACTION:

WHEREAS, Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to preventing domestic violence by educating students, staff, and the community and joining advocacy organizations to raise awareness; and

WHEREAS, The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence has designated and the United States Congress has officially recognized October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month to:

• Educate and inform the public about domestic violence;
• Encourage all to speak up about domestic violence;
• Raise awareness about domestic violence;
• Support survivors of domestic violence;
• Advocate for resources, prevention programs, and education programs (#DomesticViolenceAwareness); and

WHEREAS, Every nine seconds, a woman in the United States is beaten or assaulted by a current or ex-partner and over 10 million adults experience domestic violence annually; and

WHEREAS, One in every four women and one in every seven men have experienced significant physical violence by an intimate partner; and

WHEREAS, Domestic violence has significant impact on survivors including physical injuries, trauma, and even death; and

WHEREAS, Domestic violence is estimated to cost $8.3 billion per year in the United States;
WHEREAS, One in every fifteen children are exposed to domestic violence each year, with approximately ninety percent having witnessed this violence firsthand; now therefore be it:

Resolved, That the Montgomery County Board of Education and the interim superintendent of schools hereby proclaim October 2021, as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Montgomery County Public Schools and recommend observance to all of our schools’
