County Executive Marc Elrich has released the following statement:
Our emergency personnel are currently dealing with a tragic fire and explosion at an apartment building in Silver Spring. The incident was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m., and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue (MCFRS) promptly responded and worked to both contain the fire and assist residents. Three people with serious injuries, and seven with less severe injuries, have been taken to a hospital for care. Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is working in coordination with county and state partners as well as the Red Cross to coordinate assistance to residents who have been affected by this event. There is an active investigation as to the cause of the fire, and MCFRS will provide updates when they are available. Our thoughts are with all those who have been impacted by this horrible and tragic event.
