Montgomery College Welcomes New Senior Vice President for Advancement and Community Engagement

Per Montgomery College: Montgomery College (MC) announced Dr. Michelle A. Campbell will be its next senior vice president for advancement and community engagement, following a national search. Campbell comes to the College, located in Montgomery County, Md., from Middlesex College in New Jersey, where she served as vice president for institutional advancement. She begins her new role at Montgomery College on June 5, 2023.

Campbell will serve on the College’s senior leadership team as a member of the President’s Cabinet. She will oversee the strategic vision of the College’s advancement team, which includes the Office of Development, the Montgomery College Foundation, the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College (PIC MC) Foundation, the Alumni Association, Community Engagement, Grants and Sponsored Programs, and Special Events. Her oversight also includes the Office of Communications, which manages MC’s marketing, website, public relations, social media, publications, and Montgomery College Television.

Campbell has 18 years of experience working in education and the nonprofit sector. Her experience includes collaboration with internal and external partners to support teaching and learning, securing resources in support of campus innovation, and meeting the growing workforce needs of the community.

Under Campbell’s leadership, the Middlesex College advancement team increased grant funding from $2 million to over $12 million annually. She also led Middlesex College’s efforts to expand pre-college programming, which aided the college’s 3% increase in enrollment. At Renton Technical College (RTC) in Washington state, Campbell served as executive director of institutional advancement and oversaw the implementation of strategic initiatives including Achieving the Dream, guided pathways, and Title III, among others. Her expertise at RTC also resulted in the creation of a data infrastructure that strengthened the culture of evidence across the campus. In addition to Middlesex College and RTC, Campbell has worked at colleges and nonprofits in California, Nebraska, and New Zealand.

Campbell has driven numerous initiatives including strategic marketing, communications, and rebranding plans. Her work towards successfully increasing community and business partnerships led to the development of new certifications and apprenticeships at her previous institutions, while successfully securing more than $100 million in external funding.

Campbell holds a bachelor’s degree from Minnesota State University, a master of management studies from the University of Waikato (New Zealand), and a doctorate of education degree from Northeastern University.

Joyce Matthews, who has served as the interim senior vice president for the division since January 2022, will re-assume her position as the vice president for development and alumni relations and executive director of the Montgomery College Foundation.
