Winter Weather Advisory Expanded; Now Includes MoCo

A Winter Weather Advisory has been expanded to include all of Montgomery County. The advisory remains in effect until 10am this morning in NW MoCo (Germantown, Clarksburg, Poolesville, Damascus, etc) and remains in effect in the rest of MoCo until 8am. More below, courtesy of the National Weather Service:

* WHAT…Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of a light glaze (NW MoCo), or a light glaze of ice from freezing rain on elevated surfaces. Sleet may coat the ground as well (C/SE MoCo)

Update: One Dead, One Seriously Injured After Vehicle Strikes Pedestrians in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County Police have provided the following update on this afternoon’s fatal collision on Muddy Branch Rd in Gaithersburg:

On Wednesday, December 21, 2022, at approximately 2:03 p.m., officers responded to the area of Muddy Branch Rd. and King James Way for the report of a collision between a vehicle and two pedestrians. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the two pedestrians were struck by a gray 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe that was traveling southbound on Muddy Branch Rd.

MCPS Announces Systemwide Closure on Friday, December 23 (Schools Were Previously Closed For Students)

MCPS announced a systemwide closure for Friday, December 23, in alignment with Governor Hogan’s action to close state government agencies and offices. Schools were previously scheduled to be closed on Friday, 12/23, but now the systemwide closure includes schools and offices being closed for staff. Full message from MCPS below:

MLK Celebration, Day of Service Set for Jan. 16; High School Students Can Participate in Black History Essay Contest

Montgomery County is hosting its annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday tribute and celebration from 4–5:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 16 at The Music Center at Strathmore. This free event, “We Are Martin,” will feature special guests, performing artists and a 200-student chorus from Spark M. Matsunaga Elementary School. Tickets will be available beginning Monday, Jan. 2.

The Montgomery County Volunteer Center is also hosting its annual MLK Day of Service from noon–3 p.m. on Jan. 16, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center, 5701 Marinelli Road in North Bethesda. Students can earn up to three Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for attending and participating. Service will continue throughout the week with virtual, home-based and other on-site projects hosted by a variety of organizations.

MCPS “Try-Athlon” Winners Announced

During the Try-Athlon, this fall’s physical activity challenge, nearly 5,000 MCPS employees picked three health goals, set measurable objectives and implemented a plan for reaching them. They took part in a variety of physical activities to compete for prizes, and more importantly, to adopt or maintain healthy lifestyles. Each of the top 15 schools averaged at least 75 minutes of physical activity per employee per day.

Three Elementary Schools Named the Healthiest in MCPS

A trifecta of elementary schools has been selected for award prizes for being recognized as the healthiest schools in MCPS—Burtonsville, Glen Haven and S. Christa McAuliffe elementary schools.

The MCPS Districtwide Wellness Committee recently announced the winners of this year’s “MCPS Healthy Schools Award,” an opportunity created with Kaiser Permanente Thriving Schools and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. This program celebrates schools that have implemented remarkable initiatives related to one or more of the following areas: advancing core policies related to equity, diversity and inclusion; increasing family and community engagement; bolstering physical education and activity; strengthening social-emotional health, and cultivating staff well-being.

Bourbon Wings and Beer No Longer Taking Over Old Buffalo Wings and Beer Spot in Cloverly

In an update from early this past summer, Bourbon, Wings, and Beer (from the owners of Dominic’s Italian Grille in Colesville) told us they hoped to open by the end of August.  B.W.B. LLC had a hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) on May 19th at 10am where it was granted its “Class B Beer, Wine, and Liquor License, On Sale Only.” and renovations were ongoing. Recently, signage was removed and ‘for lease’ signs were put up on the restaurant. Today we received confirmation that the new restaurant will not be opening.

Back in January, we let you know that Buffalo Wings and Beer had closed in the Cloverly Village Center (15412 New Hamphire Ave). In February we let you know that the plan was for the restaurant to once again open, after being taken over by the owners of Dominic’s Italian Grille in Colesville. The BWB name was to remain with the acronym having a slightly different meaning as the restaurant was to be named Bourbon, Wings, and Beer. A reason why plans fell through was not provided.

MCFRS Respond to Vehicle Fire

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a vehicle fire involving a van that was making deliveries in Gaithersburg on Wednesday afternoon. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the vehicle fire occurred in the residential driveway of a home in the 8800blk Cochran Ct, near Snouffer School Rd. There were no reported injuries and no extension to the house.

For selling a $500,000 top-prize winning scratch-off, Sagar Beer & Wine located at 615 South Frederick Avenue in Gaithersburg earns a $1,000 bonus from the Lottery. This game went on sale in August 2020, starting with eight $500,000 top prizes. After the Gaithersburg resident’s win, there are still  three more unclaimed $500,000 prizes along with two unclaimed $50,000 prizes and 49 remaining $10,000 prizes.
