A federal jury has convicted a prominent appellate attorney from Montgomery County who argued more than 40 cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and co-founded the widely read legal website SCOTUSblog on multiple counts of tax and mortgage fraud.

The Montgomery County Department of Police Major Crimes Division has arrested Maurquise Emillo James, 22, in connection with the fatal shooting of Robert Fuller Jr., 87, at Cogir Potomac Senior Living. James, a Baltimore resident and employee at the facility, was arrested on February 24, 2026, and charged with first-degree murder.
The incident occurred on February 14, when officers and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel responded to a reported medical emergency and found Fuller unresponsive in his apartment. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner later ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound.
A 27-year-old Gaithersburg resident has been arrested in connection with the alleged theft of property from a home where he was hired as a professional organizer.
