Every October, The MoCoShow and families across the country revisit Halloweentown, the 1998 Disney Channel Original Movie that has become a Halloween classic. With its whimsical world of witches, goblins, and magic, the film introduced audiences to Marnie Piper, a teenager who discovers her family’s supernatural heritage. What many people may not realize is that the actress behind Marnie, Kimberly J. Brown, grew up right here in Gaithersburg.

A Joint Public Hearing will take place on Monday, October 20, 2025, at 7:30pm in the Gaithersburg Council Chambers to review the Eugene B. Casey Foundation’s proposal to redevelop the Rosedale Apartments property into a new mixed-income community with up to 434 multifamily units.

In addition to photos of classmates and teachers, old yearbooks are full of fun snapshots of the era they were created. We recently flipped through the 1999 edition of Watkins Mill High School’s yearbook, Grinder, and found a playful feature titled “‘99 Things You Never Knew About Watkins Mill.” Some of the references are inside jokes best remembered by students and staff from that time, but many are fun facts about the Watkins Mill Wolverines that everyone can enjoy. Laytonsville’s Katie Killacky, who we first featured in 2022 for her work as an actress and longtime acting coach, is seeing her daughters make waves of their own in Hollywood. Killacky, the founder of Capital Coaching Studio, has taught acting from her home in Montgomery County for nearly a decade. Now, her daughters Maggie and Annabelle are building impressive résumés with appearances across some of television and film’s biggest projects.

In less than 48 hours after the federal government shutdown was announced, two local organizers, Tiffany Kelly and Valarie Davis, mobilized a countywide effort to provide immediate relief to Montgomery County residents affected. The “Rapid Response Event” is taking place at Gaithersburg High School on Friday, October 3, 2025, from 7 pm to 9 pm.

The 1999 indie phenomenon not only redefined the horror genre but also has deep ties to Montgomery County, where much of it was filmed.

In early September, we shared the news of Gaithersburg Rental Center’s plan to close later in the month. The business, located at 219 E Diamond Avenue, closed on September 23rd after nearly nine decades as a trusted local business and community staple following the sale of the property it operated on. The community said goodbye on the business’s last Facebook last and some of the comments can be seen below.
