A new era for North Carolina football has officially begun, and a local talent from right here in Montgomery County, Maryland is at the heart of the action. True freshman Eidan Buchanan, a 6’9″, 330-pound offensive lineman from Montgomery Village,  made his first career start for the Tar Heels in tonight’s highly anticipated season opener against TCU.

Quince Orchard doesn’t lose games very often. That’s not hyperbole, it’s math. In the last 20 years, the Cougars have only lost 26 times. Just 12 of those came in the regular season. John Kelley, entering his 12th year at the helm, has 11 career losses. Eleven. And since raising his first state title trophy in 2018, he’s only lost twice, while stringing together one spotless regular season after another.

Opening night for the fall sports season is Wednesday, Sept. 3. The MCPS Athletics Safety Plan drives operations and procedures for athletic events.

High school volleyball is back in MoCo, and the energy is off the charts. Some of the area’s top athletes are coming off electric club seasons, ready to showcase their skills on the high school stage. But with new teammates, new roles, and a mix of rising stars and seasoned vets, the big question remains: will they still dominate, and which squads will rise to make a serious run this fall? With powerhouse talent fresh off club seasons now mixing into high school lineups, the stakes couldn’t be higher.

McDonogh lacrosse coach Andy Hilgartner is leaving the program after 17 seasons to become the new head coach at Georgetown Prep in North Bethesda, as first reported by Ty Xanders. The move marks the end of a highly successful era for Hilgartner at McDonogh and the beginning of a new chapter at one of the Washington DC area’s most prestigious lacrosse programs.

Local basketball talent Brandon Murray, originally from Germantown, Maryland, has officially signed his first professional contract with Sencur, a basketball club based in Slovenia. Murray attended and played middle school basketball at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Germantown.
