Most of us have seen the memes highlighting the unpredictability of Maryland weather through the years (one of them is our featured photo). Coming off of plenty of cold and some winter weather the last few weeks, we will catch a little bit of a break this coming week.
MCPS Weather Update: Code Green – Schools and Offices Open on Time – Thursday, Feb. 20
Many of you probably saw some “mood flakes” today that didn’t accumulate and were harmelss in regards to impact on roads. Tomorrow morning may be a little different as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory from 7am until 11am Thursday for most of the area. FOX5 meteorologist Mike Thomas joins us today for a guest prediction.
MCPS Weather Update: MCPS Monitoring Weather and Will Update Community by 5:00 AM Thursday, Feb. 20
We are closely monitoring the weather forecast for Thursday, February 20, which indicates the possibility of light snow accumulation beginning tomorrow morning and ranging from a dusting to an inch. Our team will actively assess conditions overnight and, if necessary, will provide an update by 5:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.
A Winter Weather Advisory will go into effect from 7am until 11am on Thursday for DC, central, north central, and northern Maryland (including all of Montgomery County), and northern Virginia.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Watch for St. Mary’s County in southern Maryland from 10am Wednesday morning until early Thursday morning, but projected snow totals have decreased for the rest of the state.
The National Weather Service has released its first set of maps for potential snow on Wednesday and it’s significant different than model outputs you may have seen shared by others last week.
The National Weather Service still has most of the area under an “Elevated” snow risk for Wednesday, but has changed Thursday to a “Limited” threat risk as weather models continuing to show less snow associated with this event.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Wind Warning in effect on Sunday from 10am until 10pm with west winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 50 to 60 mph expected for DC, central, north central, northeast, northern, and southern Maryland, and northern and northwest Virginia.
The National Weather Service (NWS) still has the entire area under an “elevated” snow risk for Wednesday and Thursday. The “elevated” risk is defined by the NWS as “Considerable snow and/or sleet accumulation will cause significant travel disruptions.”
Due to how finicky our winter weather can be, a storm showing up on a model a week or more out isn’t usually mentioned by local meteorologists. Thursday’s potential storm, however, has had a strong enough signal to be mentioned by most as we move within five days away from the possible snowstorm.
