This past March we let you know that DICK’S Sporting Goods at 2 Grand Corner in Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront is transforming into a DICK’S House of Sport– a concept designed to deliver a completely immersive experience for shoppers. The store is now aiming for a January 2026 completion date (progress photos available below).
Cinnabon is celebrating its 40th anniversary by offering its Classic Cinnamon Roll for $1.25, the same price as when the bakery first opened in 1985. The throwback pricing will be available to Cinnabon Rewards members on Friday, August 22, 2025, from 12 to 4 p.m. at participating locations nationwide. (more…)

Halloween enthusiasts in Gaithersburg can rejoice as Spirit Halloween is set to return to the Rio Lakefront. The seasonal retailer will once again be taking over the former Pier 1 Imports space at 30 Grand Corner Avenue, bringing its vast selection of costumes, decorations, and spooky animatronics back to the popular destination.
The Montgomery County Police Department and NIH Police will join The Children’s Inn at NIH on Wednesday, July 16 for the annual “Christmas in July” celebration. (more…)
The third annual “Taste of Rio” event is set for Sunday, September 28th from 2pm-6pm. The annual culinary event held at the Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg, Maryland, designed to highlight the diverse dining options available at the popular shopping and entertainment complex.
The two bronze statues of a cat and a bear have been a fixture at Gaithersburg’s Rio Lakefront for years, but did you know that they have a name and a story behind them? The whimsical sculptures of Fridolin, the bronze bear, and Kimo, a human size bronze cat, encourages a “hunt for missing objects.” (more…)

Silver Diner has just opened its new 1,581 square-foot pergola for outdoor dining at Silver Diner RIO (9811 Washingtonian Blvd in Gaithersburg). The structure now features a louvered roof and walls equipped with a retracting window and roof system.
“Remember that guy who used to paint at Rio?” Many do. If you walked through Rio in Gaithersburg between 2000 and 2016, you likely saw George Petridis working on one of his beautiful paintings, with many of his other works on display in the atrium just outside the movie theater. For more than 15 years, Petridis showcased his art and continually crafted new pieces, often interacting with those who stopped to appreciate his work amid the bustle of the Rio crowd.
