Four-Vehicle Crash on EB MD200 (ICC) Blocks Most Lanes Thursday Night

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) has responded to a collision involving four vehicles on eastbound MD200 (ICC) prior to the Georgia Avenue exit (at Emory Ln) shortly before 10:30pm on Thursday night.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the collision possibly involves a pedestrian who was changing a tire and was struck by a passing driver. A person is also trapped inside the striking vehicle. At least four patients are being evaluated with most lanes closed on eastbound MD200 (ICC) and cars getting by on the shoulder. Montgomery Planning Board Approves Permanent Road Diet on Little Falls Parkway

The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the Little Falls Parkway pilot project with four votes for the project and one abstaining, at a work session on Thursday, April 27, 2023. The Board approved reducing the number of lanes between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue from four to two and incorporating turn lanes, shoulders, a median at the Capital Crescent Trail crossing, and a median between the travel lanes where feasible.

Per Montgomery Parks: The Little Falls Parkway pilot project was initiated in 2022 to study whether two lanes between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue could accommodate vehicle traffic on this stretch of roadway. To further the County’s Vision Zero goals along the parkway, traffic counts were conducted on Little Falls Parkway between Arlington Road and Dorset Avenue during May, July, September, and December of 2022 and showed the parkway functions well with two lanes of traffic and the traffic calming improves safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

MCFRS Respond to Truck Fire on I-270 Tuesday Afternoon

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a vehicle fire on northbound I-270 (prior to Exit 6A MD 28 W Montgomery Ave) on Tuesday, April 25 around 12pm. According to Chief Spokesperson for MCFRS Pete Piringer, the vehicle involved was semi-trailer truck that was packed full of paper products. MCFRS units pulled pallets out from the truck and extinguished the smoldering debris. WTOP reports that cleanup is ongoing as of 1:30pm. Drivers should expect residual delays. We will post an update when additional information is available.

Road Closures on Sunday Morning Due to Pike’s Peek 10K

Per Pike’s Peek 10K: The race will take place on Sunday, April 23 at 7:50am. Road closures begin at 5am. The Montgomery County Road Runners Club works in conjunction with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Montgomery County Police, City of Rockville Police, Montgomery County Department of Recreation and City of Rockville to ensure that the Pike’s Peek 10K course is safe for runners and has the least impact on traffic in the area.

We use a process of rolling road closures so the flow of traffic is stopped for the least amount of time possible. All of the intersections on the course are assigned a City of Rockville/Montgomery County police person and/or a Pike’s Peek 10K course Marshal. We ask that the drivers in the area of the race course please pay attention to the instructions given to drivers.

Community Invited to Workshops for University Boulevard Corridor Plan

Workshops in April and May will discuss opportunities and challenges for the plan area. The Montgomery County Planning Department, part of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is inviting the community to attend a series of workshops for the University Boulevard Corridor Plan. The meetings will be held in a workshop format and will feature staff presentations on existing conditions followed by facilitated discussions on topics such as housing, land use, parks and open spaces, and neighborhood aspirations for the plan area. The workshops comprise of two in-person meetings and two virtual meetings for two different geographic areas along the University Boulevard Corridor plan area to allow a more focused conversation on specific parts of the plan area.

One Person Hospitalized, Two Dogs Dead Following Collision Involving Pedestrian

Muncaster Mill Rd. is closed between Bowie Mill Rd. and Needwood Rd. as the result of a traffic collision involving a pedestrian. Drivers should expect delays and seek an alternate route. Montgomery County Police tweeted the following at 5:30pm on Monday, April 10:

April 13, 2023 Planning Board Work Session on Little Falls Parkway Pilot Project is Postponed

The April 13, 2023, Planning Board work session for the Little Falls Parkway pilot project is postponed due to the unavailability of Planning Board Chair Zyontz. A new date for the work session will be determined soon and details will be announced in a follow-up press release, on Montgomery Parks website, and on social media.

Parks staff presented details about traffic counts on the parkway and a recommendation to make the pilot project permanent at a Planning Board public hearing on March 30, 2023, which was followed by public testimony. The next step is for the Planning Board to reconvene after reviewing the parks department’s recommendation and the public testimony and decide on the future of the project. One week prior to the rescheduled work session, the Parks Department will post a memorandum summarizing and responding to the public testimony.

Old Georgetown Rd. Roadwork Will Begin on April 10th to Install Green Paint for Bike Lanes

Roadwork will begin on MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) starting Monday, April 10. Crews will work from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., with overnight work possible, to install green paint for bike lanes, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. The work is expected to last for two weeks.Last October the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) announced that it started a project to significantly improve safety for bicyclists and motorists on nearly two miles of MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) in North Bethesda. The changes on MD 187, between south of I-495 (Capital Beltway) and Nicholson Lane, converted one travel lane in each direction in order to add buffered bicycle lanes and the installation of flex posts to outline the new bicycle lanes.

The addition of the bike lanes has been met with mixed reviews with a petition opposing the bike lanes receiving over 8,000 signatures and a petition created in response, supporting the bike lanes, receiving over 2,000 signatures.
