Police Investigating Assault and Attempted Robbery

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – 3rd District Investigative Section are investigating an attempted strong-arm robbery that occurred on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.  At approximately 1 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the 8500 block of Colesville Road for the report of an attempted strong-arm robbery that just occurred.

The initial investigation has revealed that the victim was walking north in the 8500 block of Colesville Road when two unknown female suspects approached her from behind. One of the suspects grabbed the victim’s hair, pulled her down to the ground and began striking the victim in the upper body and head, while the second suspect attempted to take the victim’s jacket.  Unable to remove the victim’s jacket, the suspects verbally threatened the victim and then fled the area on foot.

MCFRS Respond to Vehicle Fire in Parking Garage

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a car fire at the Cameron Street Garage(Garage 7) at 8530 Cameron St in Downtown Silver Spring on Friday morning. MCFRS tweeted the following at 9:30am: “Fire has been extinguished. No extension to the building, no injuries. Hybrid Public Meeting on the McComas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway Project to be Held on Tuesday, April 18

Per MCDOT: On Tuesday, April 18, starting at 6:30 p.m., the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will hold a public information meeting about the latest progress of the McComas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project in Wheaton. The public will have an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments.  The McCommas Avenue Neighborhood Greenway project aims to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety on McComas Avenue near Wheaton Mall. The project limit is from St. Paul Street to Georgia Avenue including portions of Douglas Avenue and Windham Lane. Neighborhood Greenways are streets with low motorized traffic volumes and speeds, designed and designated to give walking and bicycling priority by using signs, pavement markings, and speed and volume management measures to calm traffic and discourage through trips by motor vehicles to create safe, convenient use of streets by pedestrians and cyclists. Design elements can include traffic diverters at key intersections, traffic circles or mini-roundabouts, traffic calming, shared lane markings, crossing improvements, and wayfinding signage to guide bicyclists along the route and to key destinations among other things.

Online registration is required to attend. This meeting will be accessible both in-person and virtually. The in-person meeting will be held at the Kentmont Clubhouse (2900 Faulkner Pl, Kensington, MD 20895), and the virtual meeting link along with Zoom connection instructions will be emailed to you on the morning of the public meeting. Beyond MoCo: Maryland State Police Helicopter Crew Helps Rescue Elderly Lost Man

Per the Maryland State Police: A Maryland State Police helicopter helped rescue an elderly man after he became lost and hurt late Thursday morning. The 82-year-old man was found in a ravine of a densely forested area north of the Cheat River shortly before 11 a.m. He disappeared the day before from the Erwin community of Preston County, nearly eight miles from the Maryland-West Virginia line. Rescuers from the Preston County Sheriff’s Office, Rowlesburg Volunteer Fire Department and the Mountaineer Area Rescue Group were in their 14th hour of searching for the elderly man when he was located. They called for a Maryland State Police Aviation Command helicopter for an aerial rescue due to the steep terrain and access into the forest.

The crew from Trooper 5, based out of the Cumberland Section, was requested for an aerial hoist mission due to the man’s location, the surrounding topography, an extended extrication time and the nature of his injuries. West Virginia rescue personnel initiated patient care and stabilized the man. Once overhead, the pilots on Trooper 5 hovered the AgustaWestland AW-139 helicopter nearly 215 feet above the dense tree cover, while a Trooper/Paramedic was lowered below. The Trooper/Paramedic, with assistance from West Virginia rescuers, secured the injured man in a Patient Extrication Platform, commonly called a “PEP bag.”

Police Respond to Shooting Near Fairland Elementary School Thursday Night

Montgomery County Police responded to a shooting around 10:15pm on Thursday, April 13 on Fairdale Rd, near Bradshaw Dr and Fairland Elementary School. According to MCPD, “3rd District officers and MCFRS responded to the 14300 block of Fairland Rd. for the report of a shooting.  An adult male victim was located suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.  No suspect(s) in custody at this time.  This is an active and ongoing investigation.”

According to public safety reporter Cordell Pugh, the victim was struck while inside of a home after shots were fired outside and rounds penetrated the nearby residence.

The fair runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days and is open to Grade 11 students attending with their schools. The fair is also open to high school students and their families from 6:30–8 p.m. on April 18.

Recovery Point Systems, an Abry Partners company and a leader in cloud-based business resilience services based in Germantown, has announced that Jack Dziak, Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors, has been named Chief Executive Officer effective immediately. Dziak is a long-time senior technology executive with over 35 years of experience in the enterprise IT, infrastructure, and communications services industries.

Per the press release: Dziak has served on Recovery Point’s Board of Directors since May and as Executive Chairman since August 2022. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he was the Founder of Dziak Advisory Services LLC, an advisory firm that provides strategic, financial, and technology consulting to the digital infrastructure, cyber security, and managed services industries and their private equity and venture investors. His previous C-suite experience includes Executive Vice President Global Products and Chief Strategy Officer at Sungard Availability Services (2011-2017), with P&L responsibility for the $1.2B global recovery and managed services business, and Chief Operating Officer of Apcela, a provider of managed network and SD-WAN services. Dziak has also held multiple executive-level leadership positions with Accenture, Neustar, Inc., Sprint Nextel, and MCI Communications. His early career was spent as the lead financial economist for the privatization of national telecommunications concerns in over 20 countries. He holds an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and a B.S. in Economics from Virginia Tech. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

MCPS Student-Refurbished Car, Computer Sale Coming May 6

Per MCPS: Mark your calendars for the last car and computer sale of the school year! Students in the Montgomery County Students Automotive Trades Foundation (ATF) and Information Technology Foundation (ITF) will sell used cars and computers they have refurbished from 9–11 a.m. on Saturday, May 6, at Thomas Edison High School of Technology.

The cars and computers are refurbished and reconditioned by the students as part of the students’ classroom and lab studies. The sales provide students with the opportunity to practice their sales skills, earn Student Service Learning hours, and develop an appreciation for community involvement.
