MCFRS

A driver of a vehicle involved in a collision got out of their vehicle and was struck by a passing vehicle on the 11500 block of Veirs Mill Rd on Thursday evening, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:30pm on Veirs Mill Rd near Newport Mill Rd in Wheaton-Glenmont. The driver that was struck by the passing vehicle has been transported to  the hospital with priority 1 trauma (life threatening injuries). Featured photo courtesy of Google Maps


MoCo Police

He is survived by his wife Eva Roberson Brooks; and his children, Donna Brooks Sensoy, Don Michael Brooks (Sharon) and Lisa Brooks Hammond. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.


Germantown

Sushi Legend Cajun Seafood & Bar is now open at 19961 Century Blvd in Germantown, the former site of Greene Turtle. The restaurant held its official grand opening on Wednesday, December 21.  Menu items include the Queen Roll (spicy crunch crab meat, white fish, chili sauce) and the Sushi Legend Roll (deep fried kani, spicy tuna, eel, spicy mayo).  According to its website, Sushi Legend features “all you can eat” lunch and dinner options. Earlier this year signage was installed on the building for “Four Seas Restaurant”, but that restaurant never opened. We received confirmation of the permanent closure of Greene turtle in Germantown back in the summer of 2020. Since then, the building was available for sale and ended up settling back on December 17th, 2021 for $3 million. Jim McGinnis, of Restaurant Brokers & Developers, represented the sale of the building (19961 Century Blvd in Germantown), the former home of the Greene Turtle.


Silver Spring

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police- Cold Case Section are asking for the public’s assistance in locating, Maria Magdalena, a missing 58-year-old woman. Magdalena was last seen on Sunday, September 25, 2022, in the 8700 block of Georgia Avenue. Magdalena is 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighs 160 lbs. She has gray hair and brown eyes.  Police and family are concerned for her welfare.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Maria Magdalena is asked to call the non-emergency number at (301)279-8000 (24-hour line). Callers may remain anonymous.


MoCoSnow

A wind chill advisory is in effect for all of Montgomery County from 6pm Friday until 10am Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, “very cold wind chills, as low as 10 below zero, are expected. The cold wind chills could result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken. A strong cold front will move through Friday bringing a very sharp drop in temperatures with strong southerly winds shifting to strong westerly. By Friday evening, this combination of wind and cold will result in wind chills dropping below zero with wind chills as low as 10 below expected overnight Friday night into early Saturday. Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.”

Rain is likely and a little snow is possible early Friday with a rapid freeze later in the day, but there won’t be too much precipitation. A Cold Emergency Alert has also been issued for Montgomery County for 12:00 PM Friday, December 23 – 11:59 PM Saturday, December 24. “Residents should be prepared for wind chill values to be below zero degrees. Silver Spring

Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones, along with County Executive Marc Elrich and 3rd District Commander David McBain held a press conference regarding the Wednesday night homicide that occurred in the Wayne Avenue Parking Garage (Garage 60) near Ellsworth Dr. in Downtown Silver Spring. The victim has been identified as Charles Reynolds, 62, of Silver Spring.  Reynolds was bringing leftovers to his vehicle after eating dinner with his family at a nearby restaurant when he was shot and killed in the stairwell of the garage. It does not appear to be a robbery as none of the victim’s personal items were taken. There are no suspects at this time. You can view the full press conference here.

Per MCPD: Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Major Crimes Division are investigating a homicide that occurred in the parking garage on Wayne Ave. and Fenton St. on Wednesday, December 21, 2022. Detectives are urging the public for assistance in solving this homicide. At approximately 8:59 p.m., 3rd District officers and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to the location and found an adult male victim in a stairwell, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Life saving measures were provided to the victim who was then pronounced dead at the scene.  The decedent has been identified as 62-year-old Charles Joseph Reynolds, of Silver Spring.


Derwood

According to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office, the defendant in the January 2022 shooting at Magruder High School was sentenced today in the Circuit Court for Montgomery County.  The judge sentenced Steven Alston Jr. to 40 years in prison suspend all but 18 years and 5 years probation upon release. While incarcerated, he will be admitted into the Patuxent Youthful Offender Program. 

Alston pleaded guilty last month to the charge of Attempted First Degree Murder for the shooting of a fellow student at Magruder High School.  Alston was 17 years old on Friday, January 21, 2022, when he shot the 15-year-old victim inside of the school restroom using a privately manufactured firearm, or ghost gun.  He was charged as an adult.


Derwood

The shelter is still full of animals waiting to find their new homes. Many types of animals are available for adoption including birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles, cats and dogs. Adopting is easy—and even easier with $0 adoption fees. The adoption process can be started online by filling out the adoption questionnaire and emailing in the required documents. Adopters also can choose to visit the Adoption Center during open hours to start the process in-person. New animals arrive at the shelter every day. Potential adopters are encouraged to view who is available for adoption online at montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption before their visit to the facility. Adoptions are first-come, first-served by appointment. Walk-in appointments are subject to counselor availability. Adoptions are same-day and animals are not held for adopters so they should be prepared to take an animal home at the time of their appointment. The shelter will be closed for the holidays on Dec. 25 and 26.


Gaithersburg

The investigation by detectives has determined that the pedestrians were crossing Muddy Branch Road from west to east at Kings James Way when they were struck by a gray 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle traveling southbound on Muddy Branch Road. The driver remained on scene.  The male pedestrian, identified as 78-year-old, Phillip Kwang Bon Uh of Gaithersburg, sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult female pedestrian, identified as the wife of the deceased, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.
