Ms. Andrews was selected from a pool of over a dozen candidates in a nationwide search conducted by the Board of Commissioners during the past year. She brings to her new role experience leading agencies in both affordable housing and homeless sectors, with the reputation of being a bridge builder and community transformer. Currently Ms. Andrews is the Interim Executive Director of EveryOne Home, a HUD designated Continuum of Care organization in the San Francisco area, bringing together stakeholders representing Alameda County and 14 cities including Oakland and Berkeley to end homelessness for nearly 10,000 individuals.
“Over the course of my administration, I have consistently supported the right of law-abiding citizens to own and carry firearms, while enacting responsible and common sense measures to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
“Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a provision in New York law pertaining to handgun permitting that is virtually indistinguishable from Maryland law. In light of the ruling and to ensure compliance with the Constitution, I am directing the Maryland State Police to immediately suspend utilization of the ‘good and substantial reason’ standard when reviewing applications for Wear and Carry Permits. It would be unconstitutional to continue enforcing this provision in state law. There is no impact on other permitting requirements and protocols.
On July 4, 2022, at approximately 9:20 a.m., 5th District patrol officers responded to the 11300 block of Hawks Ridge Terrace in Germantown, for the report of a male shooting a rifle at people. The suspect, Frederick Njihia, shot multiple times at a WSSC worker, striking his vehicle several times, as well as a male standing next to his truck.
A description of Njihia’s vehicle, a blue Honda Civic, was provided to officers. A short time later, a Montgomery County Officer, along with a police officer candidate riding in the vehicle, were traveling on Germantown Rd. towards Frederick Rd., when they observed the suspect vehicle.

Back in January we let you know that eyewear brand Warby Parker, which does most of its business online, will be opening its third brick and mortar location in MoCo this summer. It will be located on Grand Park Avenue, taking over two different locations that have since moved – Olive & Loom and the neighboring storefront that was home to Evoluxxy. Warby Parker has posted signage stating that the grand opening will be on Saturday, July 9.
Warby Parker opened its first MoCo location at Bethesda Row in 2017, and its second this past November in Downtown Crown (Gaithersburg). The stores carry the brand’s full optical and sun eyewear offerings including its first brand of daily contact lenses. The store will offer eye exams and children’s glasses that are only available in store.
Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division (SVID) are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a missing 14-year-old from Silver Spring.
Clarissa Marie Del Rosario was last seen on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at approximately 10 a.m., leaving the 3100 block of Hewitt Avenue.
FOX5 reports that a suspect wanted in connection with a Germantown shooting fired shots at a Montgomery County Police officer this morning before initiating a pursuit that ended in Virginia after the suspect crashed their vehicle.

CVS has signed on to open a location in the new Westside at Shady Grove Metro development, in the area across from the strip that contains Starbucks, Inspire Nails, Kids Ground, and more (Crabbs Branch Way and Gramercy Blvd). The development is currently home to 407 townhomes, 1,113 multi-family units, over 40,000 SF of retail space. Future development on the east side will contain an additional 345 townhomes and 344 multi-family units.
Late last year CVS announced that it would be closing approximately 900 stores over the next 3 years due to “changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs.” A CVS location on Veirs Mill Rd. closed last November. However, new CVS locations in MoCo are planned for Clarksburg (across the outlets) and Gaithersburg (Kentlands).
Back in October we let you know that Giant Food signed on to open at the Orchard Center on Cherry Hill Rd in Calverton. The Landover-based grocery announced it signed a 20-year lease with MCB Real Estate for a 64,626-square-foot building to open a new grocery store location at the former ShopRite space at 12028 Cherry Hill Rd. ShopRite closed back in February of 2020 year and Aldi opened in the shopping center later that year in October. The grocery store is expected to open this summer, as construction has progressed and is now nearly complete.
Giant operates 164 supermarkets in Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia with about 20,000 associates. Included within the 164 stores are 152 full-service pharmacies, 82 full-service PNC Banks and 24 Starbucks locations. This will be the 21st Giant Food location in Montgomery County.
Mae was a pioneering milliner who was famous for her custom-made hats. She was active in her field from 1940 until 1997. She passed away in 2016 at age 104.
At age 28, she opened “Mae’s Millinery Shop,” located at 1630 South Street in Philadelphia. By so doing she became one of the first African American women to own her own business in downtown Philadelphia.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Units (MCFRS) were called to the scene of a person who was injured by a fall on Billy Goat Trail A at the C&O canal at approximately noon on Sunday, according to MCFRS PIO Pete Piringer.
The fall occurred in the area of TM2/traverse and the units arrived to find an injured juvenile patient (pre-teen). The child was extracted by boat and the rescue team crews moved the patient to EMS that was awaiting in a staging area after hiking down around the north side of the traverse to the Seift Water Rescue boats (Potomac River). After evaluation, the child was transported to the hospital with Pri3 (non-urgent and non life-threatening) injuries.
