Last month we let you know that beloved Hong Kong-style dim sum and Chinese cuisine, Hollywood East Cafe will be closing its doors on August 24, 2025 after nearly three decades of serving the Wheaton, MD community. Eater DC has included the upcoming closing in its list of “Saddest DC-Area Restaurant Closings.

Montgomery County is no stranger to fostering entrepreneurial spirit, and Nick Scrivens, a Churchill High School (class of 2005) alumnus, is a prime example. His apparel company, Fore Fathers, known for its stylish and dad-centric clothing, has just released a new design that hits close to home– the “Maryland Man” shirt.

Pilar Sanders, the proud mother of NFL players Shilo and Shedeur Sanders, was seen cheering on her son, Shilo Sanders, in a custom outfit designed by Montgomery County’s Passion For Ezra. The outfit was worn for Shilo’s preseason debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he made an impression with a significant hit and a tackle.

Bethesda

Drew Morrison, 33, a longtime Bethesda resident and policy professional, announced his candidacy for the District 1 seat on the Montgomery County Council, with the Democratic primary set for June 23, 2026. Raised in the Edgemoor and Mohican Hills neighborhoods, Morrison has served in local government, worked as a consultant, and currently serves as a Policy Advisor at the Maryland Department of Transportation, where he was named Employee of the Year in 2024. DC Sports

The Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders have mutually agreed to cancel their upcoming joint practice, citing “logistical challenges” and the short turnaround between games as the primary reasons. The practice, which was scheduled to take place before their preseason matchup, has been scrapped to allow both teams to focus on their individual preparations.

A familiar face has returned to Woodley Gardens, bringing a new community gathering spot with it. Neighbors Coffee, a new café founded by local couple Spencer and Lulu Trach, has officially opened its doors at 1101 Nelson Street, taking over the former Essex Bank location (video below).

Beyond MoCo

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport intercepted 23 pounds of marijuana in the checked luggage of Octavious Lamar Dozier, 27, of Atlanta, on August 5, leading to his arrest by Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police. This was the second such arrest in three days at Dulles, as authorities report an ongoing trend of attempts to smuggle marijuana to Europe where it commands higher profits. (more…)
