Park Police are reminding residents that beginning Monday, September 22, Sligo Creek Parkway between Wayne Avenue and Piney Branch Road will be closed for approximately two months to allow Purple Line crews to install tracks across the intersection of Wayne Avenue and Sligo Creek. Two weeks into the season, the picture in Montgomery County volleyball is starting to heat up. Magruder, Quince Orchard, and Sherwood all remain undefeated at 5-0, proving their early-season dominance. Wootton (5-1), Bethesda-Chevy Chase (4-1), and Richard Montgomery (4-1) continue to keep pace as the first chasers in a crowded top tier.

Gaithersburg

By any measure, this was supposed to be a slugfest… Maryland’s highest ranked public school football team against Virginia’s highest ranked public school football team. Quince Orchard’s latest renewal of its budding interstate rivalry with Stone Bridge (VA) had all the makings of another nail-biter, two perennial powers, both with hard-nosed reputations, clashing in late September. But when the final horn sounded at the Cougar Dome, it was clear there was only one bully left standing.

Levita Almuete Ferrer, 65, of Montgomery Village, Md., was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to 12 months and one day in prison for embezzling more than $650,000 from the U.S. State Department over a two-year period, using the funds to fuel her gambling addiction, announced U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro.

DC Sports

The Washington Commanders’ 41–24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders had a dramatic moment just before halftime that involved head coach Dan Quinn taking a big hit on the sidelines. As the team got into field goal position, quarterback Marcus Mariota accidentally collided with head coach Dan Quinn, knocking him to the ground and bloodying his nose. Quinn’s head hit the turf as he went down, but he quickly bounced back up and continued coaching as if nothing had happened, drawing reactions from players and staff after the game.

Beyond MoCo

Frederick County is getting its first Raising Cane’s, which marks yet another step towards a potential Montgomery County location. Site plans confirm that the Applebee’s at 5613 Spectrum Drive, near the Francis Scott Key Mall, will be demolished to make way for a new 3,300 SF Raising Cane’s with a drive-thru, according to Frederick City Media.

DC Sports

The Washington Commanders bounced back in a big way Sunday, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 41–24 at home. With second-year quarterback Jayden Daniels sidelined, veteran backup Marcus Mariota stepped in and delivered a strong performance, while special teams also played a key role in securing the win.
