On Monday, the Justice Department unsealed criminal charges against Igor Lira, 40, a Slovakia national, for allegedly transmitting a threat in interstate or international commerce containing a threat to injure. Lira made his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland Monday after he was extradited from Germany.
Due to the impending inclement weather, Montgomery College will operate under Code GREEN with regular instruction and services until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 11, after which it will close and transition to Code RED until 7 a.m. on Wednesday, February 12. (more…)

Newly announced, the festival will open on Friday evening, September 11, with a special tribute honoring the 25th anniversary of 9/11. All three bands performing that evening include veterans and active-duty military members.

The Montgomery County Council will vote on Bill 24-24, Taxation – Paper Carryout Bags and Prohibition on Plastic Carryout Bags (also known as the Bring Your Own Bag Bill), on Tuesday, February 11. If passed, the bill would prohibit plastic carryout bags provided by retail establishments, with certain exceptions, impose a tax on paper carryout bags at the point of sale, and require a tax on plastic carryout bags if provided within a municipality. Montgomery County Government issued the following news release stating that a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning, with expected snow accumulations of 4-6 inches impacting travel. MCDOT has begun pretreating roads, will activate its Storm Operations Center, and urges residents to avoid driving once snow begins, while Ride On bus service may experience delays and detours.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has announced preparations for the incoming winter storm, including road pretreatment with salt brine, deployment of emergency patrols, and a request for drivers to limit unnecessary travel to aid snow and ice removal efforts. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to the scene of a collision at the intersection of Seneca Meadows Parkway and Germantown Road in Germantown at approximately 4:10pm.
