Beyond MoCo

On Monday, January 6, 2025, the President signed into law: H.R. 4984, the “D.C. Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus Revitalization Act,” which directs the Secretary of the Interior to transfer administrative jurisdiction over the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium Campus to the District of Columbia to allow the District to use the Campus for stadium development, residential and commercial development, and other specified purposes. This bill makes it possible for the Washington Commanders to return to DC if they choose the RFK site for their new stadium.

Announcement

On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.

An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.

According to Maryland Lottery and Gaming, Maryland’s six casinos combined to generate $164,105,250 in revenue from slot machines and table games during December 2024, a decrease of $1,523,913 (-0.9%) compared to December 2023. Casino gaming contributions to the state during December 2024 totaled $69,837,949, a decrease of $357,058 (-0.5%) compared to December 2023. The December 2024 contributions included $50,413,308 to the Education Trust Fund, a decrease of $247,243 (-0.5%) compared to December 2023. (more…)


MoCo Government

Montgomery County has announced ongoing efforts to address hazardous conditions caused by the region’s first major snowstorm in three years. Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and a snow emergency is still in effect with parking restrictions in place. Government operations, transit services, and trash collections have been adjusted, with residents urged to stay off the roads unless necessary. The County also encourages checking on neighbors, especially older adults or those living alone, and offers resources for unhoused individuals seeking shelter. (more…)

The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with the Maryland Living Well Center of Excellence, is offering a free six-week online Diabetes Self-Management Program starting January 15 to help residents, particularly in high-risk zip codes, better manage diabetes through education and practical strategies. Per the latest map by the National Weather Service (NWS), an additional 1-2” or 1-3” is expected to fall this afternoon into tonight. The map shows expected snowfall from 1pm Monday until 7am Tuesday, but the precipitation is expected to move out of the area late tonight.
