Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) is reminding residents that all fireworks are illegal in Montgomery County, MD.

On New Year’s Eve, MCFRS Spokesperson Pete Piringer took to Twitter to emphasize the message, stating: “Do What’s Right – Don’t Ignite.”


Arts

On January 20, 2023 The Give A Hoot Comedy Club opened in Gaithersburg (16143 Shady Grove Rd.), making it the first full-time comedy club in Montgomery County. It began with a mission “Comedy For the Community”, raising money for non-profit organizations in the county through comedy. The club, which was founded by Irwin Weinstein, Ken Watter and Courtland Shaffer-Kelly, raised over $30,000 for local non-profits in 2024 (video of the experience can be seen below).

DMV

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has shared that a significant pattern change is expected across much of the country as an Arctic Outbreak is forecast to spread from the Northern Plains to the south and east, leading to exceptionally high probabilities of below-normal temperatures expected across much of the East. It also comes with a risk of heavy snow, which is just slight for now.

Beyond MoCo

The Metropolitan Police Department (Washington DC)  announced the arrest of a suspect in an assault that occurred in Southwest near The Wharf. The suspect is 25-year-old Nathan Cinada of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Announcement

On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.

An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.


Gaithersburg

The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division has identified 35-year-old Marvin Salamanca Garcia as the decedent and seven Gaithersburg Police Department officers involved in the December 24, 2024, police-involved in-custody death, which remains under investigation. (more…)


Rockville

Back in October we let you know that Trader Joe’s is set to open at 225 N. Washington St. in Rockville Town Square taking over the former Dawson’s Market space, which closed this past summer after twelve years. The Grocery store recently gutted the interior and construction is now in the early stages at the upcoming location (photos below).
