The RFK bill, which would allow DC to take control of federal land (the site of RFK stadium) has successfully passed the committee vote with a score of 17-2– marking an important, but not final milestone. The site remains in play as the Washington Commanders search for a site for their new stadium.
Melissa Curtis, 32, of Upper Marlboro, was sentenced to 30 years in prison, suspending all but 12 months, and five years of supervised probation after pleading guilty to three counts of third-degree sex offense for abusing a 14-year-old student while teaching at Montgomery Village Middle School in 2015. The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) announced on Monday the launch of Mobile ID Check by MD, a free, new app that provides a secure and convenient way for businesses to accept mobile driver’s licenses and identification cards for in-person age verification — all on their mobile device, with no additional hardware required.
U.S. Soccer announced a historic gift today for its women’s and girls’ soccer programs from businesswoman, team owner, and women’s sports advocate Michele Kang. Kang has pledged to give U.S. Soccer, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, $30 million dollars over the next five years which is the largest philanthropic investment in U.S. Soccer’s women’s and girls’ programs and the most generous donation ever made to U.S. Soccer by a woman, according to a Washington Spirit press release.
On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.
An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.

The Justice Department unsealed criminal charges against Evgenii Ptitsyn, 42, a Russian national, for allegedly administering the sale, distribution, and operation of Phobos ransomware. Ptitsyn made his initial appearance in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on November 4 after being extradited from South Korea.
