MCFRS

There are multiple injuries and casualties after a fire and explosion at a residential apartment building on the 2400 Block of Laytonsville Road in Silver Spring, according to Cheif Spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Pete Piringer.

MCFRS is currently on the scene of the 2nd alarm fire. Piringer reports that there has been a structural collapse at the building.

Cana Development and GBT Realty Corporation (GBT) have announced DMV Empanadas and Trini Vybez as the first two restaurants for Commas, a new 13,000 square foot food hall coming later this year to the 3rd level of Ellsworth Place (8661 Colesville Rd) in Downtown Silver Spring. Commas is described as a “global collection for curious eaters” that “goes beyond the average food hall to bring the neighborhood a unique culinary experience reflective of its diverse international community.” Additional information, per Commas, below:


Business

Silver Spring’s United Therapeutics Corporation provided an update on Mr. David Bennett, the first UHeart™ recipient, stating that “The recent transplants of our xenoheart and xenokidney products demonstrate the tremendous potential of our business model for the second half of the 2020s and beyond. Indeed, Mr. David Bennett, Sr., the first UHeart™ recipient, continues to have strong cardiovascular function seven weeks after his transplant.”

The surgery took place at the University of Maryland Medical Centre (UMMC). It was a first of its kind transplant of a genetically modified pig heart that was successfully carried out in David Bennett, a 57-year-old man with terminal heart disease.


Crime

Mason Binion was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the 2008 murder of 21 year old Silver Spring resident, Michael F. Taylor.

According to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office, District of Columbia, the murder followed a “botched drug transaction.”

Per Montgomery County:

On Monday, Feb. 28, Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich will be joined by Montgomery County Councilmember Will Jawando, Montgomery County Public Libraries Director Anita Vassallo, Montgomery County Department of General Services Director David Dise, the Montgomery County Commission on Veterans Affairs, family members of Brig. Gen. Charles E.  McGee, and others in a ceremony to sign a bill that will enable the County to rename the Silver Spring Library to the “Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library.”

Tropical Smoothie Cafe has opened many new locations in MoCo in the last couple years and their latest location will be at 10141 Colesville Rd, at the Woodmoor Shopping Center, according to a report by Source of the Spring.  It will be taking over the space formerly occupied by Hoover-Fisher Florists.

No opening date has been announced.


MCPS

Stonegate Elementary School students are now attending school at North Lake Center on Bauer Drive in Aspen Hill, approximately 7.2 miles away from the elementary school. Construction began over winter break and the old building was recently demolished.

For years, planners and school district officials have been at odds over the design of new schools due to parking lots and bus loops at the front of the building, “separating the building from the community”, according to a report by Caitlynn Peetz.


Silver Spring

Burmese restaurant Mandalay at 930 Bonifant Street in Silver Spring posted a message on their Facebook account Saturday asking for the public’s opinion on if they should reopen the location.  The restaurant officially closed on October 31 of last year.

Mandalay  first announced in 2019 that they were moving to a new location in Washington, DC., but there have been few updates on the status of that location.
