Per the Maryland State Police: With more than 1 million Marylanders expected to travel 50 or more miles over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Maryland State Police will be increasing patrols to ensure motorists arrive safely at their destination.

Maryland State Police will be conducting saturation patrols at each of the 23 barracks with a focus on impaired, aggressive and distracted driving. The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort team, otherwise known as the SPIDRE team, will also be patrolling this weekend. The goal of the SPIDRE team is to focus on removing these dangerous drivers from Maryland highways who endanger the lives of other motorists. Enforcement will be bolstered by impaired driving saturation patrol funds from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.

Beyond MoCo: Navy Football Unveils NASA Themed Jerseys

Navy Athletics and Under Armour have debuted their astronaut-themed uniform the Navy football team will wear for the 123rd Army-Navy Game presented by USAA (photos below).

Per Navy: Fifty-four United States Naval Academy graduates have gone on to become astronauts, the most of any institution. The first Naval Academy graduate to become an astronaut was Alan Shepard (’45), who was the first American in space (May 5, 1961) and was one of NASA’s first seven astronauts. Shepard’s second space flight was on Feb. 5, 1971, when Apollo 14 landed on the moon and he went on two moonwalks. In 1985, Naval Academy graduate Bruce McCandless II (’58) took the first untethered spacewalk, venturing further away from the confines and safety of a ship than any previous astronaut.

County Executive Elrich Is Holding Hybrid Forums to Seek Input on FY 2024 Operating Budget (November and December)

Residents can attend most forums in person or view them via the internet. The forum scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, at the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center, Inc. in Gaithersburg will be conducted in Chinese. The County is in the early stages of formulating the FY24 operating budget. County Executive Elrich is required to submit a recommended budget to the County Council by March 15. The Council will then have two months to review the budget. It must adopt a final budget no later than June 1. The FY24 operating budget will go into effect on July 1. “The budget is a primary indicator of the priorities of any jurisdiction,” said County Executive Elrich. “This is why community and resident involvement is essential to the process of developing a budget that reflects our values and goals. The objective is the make these forums accessible and interactive. I encourage residents to participate in the discussions because they are for you. No matter where you live or your age, I want to hear from as many people as possible. We were fortunate to maintain a very strong financial position throughout the pandemic, which enabled us to continue to support programs and services that are important to residents. Now we are looking ahead to the many ways we can make this a better place to live for everyone.”

The forums will be televised live on the County cable station County Cable Montgomery (CCM), which can be seen on Comcast (Channel 6 and High-Definition Channel 996), RCN (Channel 6 and HD 1056) and Verizon (Channel 30). The forums also will be available on cable channels Takoma Park City TV (Channel 13), Montgomery Municipal (Channel 16, 997 Comcast), Corona Montgomery (Channel 10) and Montgomery Community Media (Channel 21). NBC 4’s Doreen Gentzler to Retire After Tonight’s 6PM Newscast

Tonight’s 6pm broadcast will be the last for longtime NBC4 newscaster Doreen Gentzler. Gentzler, who joined NBC4 in 1989, following the departure of Dave Marash, has been with the station for 33 years. She announced her plans to retire back in October. Gentzler co-anchored the weekday 6pm and 11pm editions of News4 on WRC-TV (NBC4) and was also the station’s health reporter. She has also made appearances as herself on NBC shows The Event and The Blacklist. Gentzler anchored WRC’s 6pm news alongside veteran anchor Jim Vance for 28 years – a partnership that lasted until Vance’s death in July 2017.

Per NBC4, Gentzler shared the following, “I have some personal news to share this evening. It may cause me to get a little emotional, so I’ll just say it outright. I’ve decided to retire. Not an easy choice, but something I’ve been considering for a while … I’ve been working here for more than half my life. The babies that I had during the ’90s have grown up and moved out.” Gentzler, a native of Arlington, Virginia, returned home to the Washington area in 1989 to join Jim Vance, Bob Ryan and George Michael on the WRC anchor desk. On her first newscast, Gentzler’s longtime co-anchor and close friend Jim Vance welcomed her by saying, “This is Doreen, folks. Doreen Gentzler. She’s going to be with us for quite a while.” Thirty-three years later, it’s safe to say Vance was right.

Beyond MoCo: Art Installation Using 10,000 Plastic Forks at Freedom Plaza Spotlights Hunger Crisis

A temporary art installation during So Others Might Eat (SOME) 21st Annual America’s Trot for Hunger uses more than 10,000 plastic forks (close-up image below) to drive home the message that together we can end hunger. The artwork, inspired by the slogan Stick a Fork in Hunger and created by Virginia artist Jake Van Yahres, will be on display in Freedom Plaza on November 24th as more than 15,000 participants gather for the Trot for Hunger, the largest and onlyThanksgiving Day race in DC to fight hunger.

Per the press release: “Because we all are inspired in different ways, we wanted to see how art can provide a visual representation of the struggle of hunger and homelessness and also showcase what it looks like to help make a change in someone’s life for the better,” said Brett Curtis, SOME’s Trot for Hunger Race Director and Special Events Manager. “The mediums used to create this piece of art combined with its message is one we believe really drives home the reason why we are all gathering to make a difference at the America’s Trot for Hunger event.”

The City of Gaithersburg’s Winter Lights Festival is getting ready to welcome visitors for another spectacular season. The wondrous display of lights at Seneca Creek State Park will be open nightly November 25 through December 31. The festival is closed on December 25 and last entry for December 24 & 31 is 8:30 p.m. The 3.5 mile drive through the enchanted setting of Seneca Creek State Park takes you past more than 450 illuminated displays and beautifully lit trees that light up the night. The park is located at 11950 Clopper Road, conveniently accessible from I-270.

Rockville Wegmans Update (Twinbrook Quarter); What to Expect and When

Work continues on Phase One of Twinbrook Quarter, the upcoming development located on the southwest corner of the property at Rockville Pike and Halpine Road. It includes residential, office and commercial space, and will include Montgomery County’s second Wegmans.

Level 4 concrete pouring is scheduled for completion by the end of November. Levels 1 – 4 will define the space for Wegmans, other retail amenities, and the parking garage. Framing for concrete on Level 5 began last week. From this point on, all future levels will be devoted to the apartment building, going up to the 12th floor. Conditions and weather permitting, the hope is to complete pouring all levels by late Spring/early Summer 2023. Construction on the building façade should begin in early 2023. Wegmans itself is not expected to open until at least 2024. More on what to expect when the project is completed in 2024-2025, per Twinbrook Quarter (rendering seen above):
