According to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), 99% of Maryland residents are REAL ID compliant ahead of the May 7, 2025, implementation of the federal REAL ID Act, which will require a compliant ID or another federally recognized form of identification for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. Announcement

On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.

An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.


Business

AstraZeneca, which has a significant presence in Montgomery County with a large scientific campus/base in Gaithersburg and a new manufacturing facility in Rockville, has agreed to acquire EsoBiotec– a biotech company specializing in innovative cell therapies, for up to $1 billion.

Beyond MoCo

On Saturday morning, Dublin Roasters Coffee, located at 1780 N Market St, Ste C in Frederick, addressed a concerning incident that occurred earlier in the week in their outdoor tent area. A small child was attacked by a leashed dog that broke free from its owner. The café expressed deep concern for all those involved, including the child and their family, the dog owner, witnesses, and the staff members who were present.

Crime

A federal grand jury has indicted Brendyn Andrew, 33, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, charging him with aggravated identity theft, supplemental nutrition assistance program (SNAP) benefits fraud, social security number misuse, and theft of government property. The defendant will have an initial appearance today at 4:30 p.m., in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt before U.S. Magistrate Judge Gina L. Simms.

MoCo Government

Montgomery County residents are invited to a virtual discussion on March 28 about “Longevity Ready Maryland,” a statewide initiative focused on improving community accessibility and long-term well-being for all ages. Hosted by Age-Friendly Montgomery, the event will allow participants to provide feedback on the plan, which aims to create supportive, inclusive communities across Maryland.

Bread Corner, located at 591 Hungerford Dr. in Rockville, has recently undergone renovations and expanded its offerings to include Teamania branding and HiTea bubble tea. This weekend, the bakery is celebrating a “Grand Opening,” which is more of a grand reopening with promotions.
