Bill MD SB613 was introduced on January 28th by Senator Jeff Waldstreicher (D–Montgomery County, District 18) and Senator Michael Jackson (D-Prince George’s County, District 27) to establish a pilot program that permits the use of video cameras in Montgomery County and Prince George’s County to enforce specific prohibitions related to the use of mobile devices while operating a vehicle.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at Washington Dulles International Airport seized 257 pounds of dried opium poppy pods between February 12 and February 21, 2025, from 81 shipments originating in Madrid, Spain. The controlled substances, often used to make narcotic “poppy tea,” were mislabeled as decorative items and destined for multiple addresses across the U.S., with CBP officers seizing them for destruction as part of ongoing efforts to prevent illicit drug imports. On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.
An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.
