Maryland holds the unique distinction of being the only U.S. state without any natural lakes. While the state boasts an abundance of rivers, streams, and the extensive Chesapeake Bay, you won’t find a single body of water formed by natural geological processes that is classified as a natural lake within its borders. This characteristic sets Maryland apart from every other state, most of which have numerous glacial, tectonic, or volcanic lakes.
Despite this geological particularity, Marylanders and visitors still have access to plenty of water-based recreation thanks to numerous man-made reservoirs and impoundments. Today we will look at the three largest lakes/reservoirs (all man-made) in the state of Maryland:
Kings Dominion and Soak City have announced a temporary closure this weekend due to a nearby water main break that has disrupted the local water supply. The popular amusement park and water park will remain closed on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22, as a result of the issue.
A Maryland State Trooper was hospitalized and later released after being struck by a vehicle during a crash investigation on I-495 early Saturday morning. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Teo Kim, may have been impaired, and charges are pending.
Virginia’s first Buc-ee’s will open on June 30th at 838 Friedens Church Rd. in Mount Crawford, VA. It will be located at the exit 240 interchange on Interstate 81 near Harrisonburg, VA. Fans are already planning to camp out for the 6am opening, and a ribbon cutting kicks off the day at 10 AM, with live music, free samples, and giveaways adding to the celebration.
The Maryland State Police have arrested a 28-year-old Illinois man in connection with a shooting on I-83 in Baltimore County and believe he may be linked to three additional shootings that occurred the same night along I-83 in Pennsylvania. (more…)
