The National Weather Service (NWS) is expecting a light snowfall across much of Maryland and Northern Virginia Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, with expected snowfall maps showing around half an inch of snow (a 10% chance of higher end totals can reach an inch, per the map below).
A Cold Weather Advisory is now in effect for Montgomery County from 10pm Sunday through 8am Monday, according to the National Weather Service, as an arctic air mass continues to impact the region.

Montgomery County Public Schools announced that all schools will remain closed to students on Monday, February 2, 2026, while school system offices will open on time and staff are expected to report as they would on a regular non-instructional day.
When the decision was made on Thursday to close schools for Friday, Jan. 30, Montgomery County Public Schools also shared early guidance about the start of the following week.

Dangerously cold conditions are expected across the region this weekend, with the National Weather Service warning that wind chills will drop well below zero during overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service, a Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. this evening through 11 a.m. Saturday. In addition, an Extreme Cold Watch has been issued for Saturday night. Wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero are expected, creating hazardous conditions for anyone spending time outdoors.

Montgomery County Public Schools has clarified why it is not shifting to virtual learning during weather related school closures, despite ongoing questions from families.

Montgomery County Public Schools has announced a Code Red closure for Friday, January 30, as cleanup efforts from the recent winter storm continue across the county. The school system also announced a delay is likely for Monday, February 2nd.
MCPS building service employees are working hard to clear the schools, but the ice has proven to be a challenge as some schools are just getting started/still working on clearing bus lanes and parking lots based on photos sent in Thursday morning.
