Last year, Atlantic Union and Olney-based Sandy Spring Bank announced that they entered into a definitive merger agreement for Atlantic Union to acquire Sandy Spring in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The acquisition was completed on April 1st and the combination of the two organizations created the largest regional bank headquartered in the lower Mid-Atlantic. Now, Atlantic Union has shared that Sandy Spring Bank will officially make the change to Atlantic Union this October.
After being ranked 14th in its population group out of more than 17,000 participating communities worldwide last year, Olney’s National Night Out is back and bigger than ever for its 30th anniversary. Hosted by the Olney Chamber of Commerce, this beloved community event takes place on Tuesday, August 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the parking lots of The Fair Hill Shops and Olney Village Center.
A retired federal law enforcement officer from Olney won $50,000 playing Bonus Match 5 after purchasing the ticket at Elbe’s Beer and Wine in Wheaton, a longtime lottery retailer that has been serving the community since 1951 and where he’s been a regular customer since 1977. Many consider the Sunshine Burger from the Sunshine General Store in Brookeville, MD (often referred to as Sunshine, between Olney and Damascus) the best burger in Maryland. The burger boasts a ½ pound of ground beef topped with lettuce, tomato, onions, ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise. However, part of the burger’s charm lies in the unique atmosphere of the General Store itself. A MoCoShow commenter once wrote “Best burger in Maryland, just don’t look at the walls.”
In the heart of Montgomery County, a new wave of energy and excitement is taking over Monday evenings. Meet Sash Sujith, a Montgomery County native with a passion for dance and community, who is transforming the way adults in the area engage with the vibrant art of Bhangra. A former member of the University of Maryland’s competitive Bhangra team, Sash felt a void after graduation– a lack of spaces where adults could dance purely for fun and connection. This realization inspired the launch of MitranDe Bhangra Workshops in June.
