Gaithersburg

Wendy’s at 18425 Woodfield Rd in Gaithersburg is undergoing renovations that will bring brighter dining areas with additional seating options like private booths or lounge seating,  new freestyle soda dispensers, and modern contemporary designs. When the restaurant has its grand re-opening event on Saturday, October 15th, they’ll give away 100 VIP ticket to those 16 and older and present in line at 10:30am when the dining room opens (a purchase is necessary to be considered for a card). Anyone who gets a VIP ticket will be able to come back to the store once a week for a year to receive a free sandwich, salad, or breakfast biscuit.

Business

In August we let you know of a joint-venture between Minkoff Development and South Duvall signing a lease with Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES) to build a 140,000 square foot build-to-suit project on Montgomery College’s Germantown Campus. The Hughes Network Systems Sattelite Production Facility broke ground on Monday and will be bringing approximately 300 jobs to Germantown, according to Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce CEO, Marilyn Balcombe.

The campus currently is home to the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College (PIC MC) with Holy Cross Germantown Hospital as its anchor tenant. Located at 19710 Observation Drive in Germantown, Maryland, adjacent to the Hughes headquarters complex (11717 Exploration Lane), the new high-tech manufacturing building will house production of Hughes satellite broadband and networking equipment.


Gaithersburg

Per the City of Gaithersburg: The City of Gaithersburg, in partnership with the national Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund), announced today the grand opening of its Financial Empowerment Center (FEC), offering professional, one-on-one financial counseling and coaching as a free public service for City residents.

With the Gaithersburg FEC, professionally trained financial counselors help individuals and families manage their finances, pay down debt, increase savings, establish and build credit, improve their credit score, and access safe and affordable mainstream banking products. At the core of the FEC model is the integration of counseling into other social services, such as housing and foreclosure prevention, workforce development, benefits access, domestic violence services, and more. The Gaithersburg FEC is a partnership with Housing Initiative Partnership (HIP), a local nonprofit housing developer and counseling agency that contracts with the City to provide the counseling services.


Germantown

Per the U.S. Attorney’s Office, DC: The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced that there is insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights or District of Columbia charges against two officers from the U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division who were involved in the fatal shooting, in April 2022, of 19-year-old Gordon Casey of Germantown outside an ambassador’s residence in Northwest Washington.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) conducted a comprehensive review of the incident. This included a review of law enforcement and civilian eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, recorded radio communications, forensic reports, the autopsy report, and reports from the Metropolitan Police Department.


Cabin John

Esteemed Federal Government columnist and radio host Norman “Mike” Causey passed away late last month at the age of 82.

At the Federal News Network and WTOP Radio studios in Friendship Heights, Causey had wrapped up recording a radio segment when he was found unresponsive in his office by a colleague. Valiant bystander CPR, as well as attempts from Montgomery County Fire & Rescue, proved unsuccessful.


MCFRS

The Fire Prevention and Code Compliance division of the County’s Department of Permitting Services (DPS) is a team of inspectors, engineers, program managers and administrative support staff who are responsible for performing periodic inspections of establishments after the permitting process is complete.

According to Fire Code Compliance Manager Patsy Warnick, the team represents the fire department on all technical matters outside of emergency operations.

The County’s East County Reginal Services Center requested the Department of Transportation to block off Newell Street to allow individuals, families and groups to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day in their own way. Newell Street is adjacent to Acorn Park in Silver Spring.

Poolesville (5-0) at Catoctin (2-3) – The Falcons are still soaring after defeating Magruder 38-14. RB Evan Taylor is proving to be one of the better backs in the county, running for 242 yds and 5 TDs! Poolesville will travel to Frederick County next to take on Catoctin.
