The Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Child Care Support Services honored ten local early childhood professionals at the third annual Early Care and Education Excellence Awards, selected from over 250 nominations across six award categories.
Update: The owner of Gyroland says no final decision has been made yet on the restaurant’s future. We were previously told by an employee that it would close by the end of the year after hearing from several readers that they were told the same. We’ll keep following this story. Gyroland, the popular Greek fast-casual restaurant located at 1701 Rockville Pike in Rockville’s Shops at Congressional Village shopping center, plans to close by this winter, according to a restaurant representative.

Outback Steakhouse has closed its Downtown Silver Spring location just a year and a half after opening, according to Source of the Spring.
Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart and councilmembers will hold a press conference on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. to announce a proposed $7.75 million Public Service Support Resolution to aid residents and nonprofits affected by the federal government shutdown, with introduction on Nov. 4 and a public hearing and vote on Nov. 18. Reserve your spot for an after-hour event with multi-disciplinary artist Sky Hopinka, Thursday, Nov. 5, 6–9 PM. Experience monumental nature-inspired artworks in the Water’s Edge exhibition, make your own artwork to take home at the National Museum of the American Indian.
Sky Hopinka’s photo and video art—including This is a mnemonic for Truman Lowe in the museum’s collection—shares Truman Lowe’s interest in Indigenous homelands, cultural knowledge, and traditional practices. Hopinka contributed to the exhibition catalog for Water’s Edge: The Art of Truman Lowe, writing on Lowe’s lasting impact on his work. Hopinka joins the museum for this special after hours event featuring a screening of three of his short video works followed by a discussion with Rebecca Head Trautmann, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art and exhibition curator, along with art-making activities, and time to enjoy Lowe’s work currently on view. Sky Hopinka has been widely recognized for his experimental short films and photo-based works. A MacArthur Fellow, Guggenheim Fellow, and Forge Project Fellow, his work has been shown in major film festivals, museums, and international exhibitions and is in numerous prominent museum collections. Hopinka is currently an assistant professor in the department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies at Harvard University.

Another piece of the puzzle has fallen into place for the former Buca Di Beppo space in Gaithersburg’s Kentlands. Just days after it was confirmed that Tatte Bakery & Café would be opening in half of the building, we’ve learned that Mattress Warehouse will occupy the other half.
Montgomery County will participate in the national “Operation Green Light” initiative leading up to Veterans Day to honor veterans and raise awareness of local and national resources available to those who have served. From Nov. 4–11, the County will light public buildings in green, host community events and ceremonies, and unveil a Ride On bus tribute while encouraging residents and businesses to display green lights in recognition of veterans. Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Special Victims Investigations Division are asking for the public’s assistance in locating Carmen Webb, a missing 15-year-old.
Montgomery County Police have arrested 33-year-old Elijah Bell of Rockville following a months-long investigation into suspected drug distribution. Officers recovered more than 2,700 grams of cocaine, 10 pounds of cannabis, two stolen handguns, and $10,000 in cash during search warrants, leading to multiple drug and firearms charges.
