Victim’s Identity Released in Fatal Collision Involving Bicyclist and Trash Collection Truck That Occurred Friday Morning in Gaithersburg

MCPD UPDATE: January 15, 2022: Victim’s Name Released in January 14 Fatality

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit have identified the victim in the January 14 fatality as 61-year-old Zhen Xiu Chen of Gaithersburg.

Gaithersburg, MD – Detectives from the Montgomery County Department of Police – Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) are investigating a  fatal collision that occurred today, January 14, 2022 at the intersection of S. Frederick Ave. at S. Westland Dr. in Gaithersburg.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Montgomery County Police, Gaithersburg City Police and Montgomery County Fire Rescue personnel responded to the location for the report of a traffic collision involving a bicyclist and a Potomac Disposal Mack trash collection truck.

The investigation by detectives has determined that the Potomac Disposal vehicle was making a right-turn from westbound S. Westland Dr. onto northbound S. Frederick Ave. The operator of the bicycle was riding the bicycle westerly across the northbound lanes of S. Frederick Ave. at the crosswalk when the two collided on S. Frederick Ave.

 

The bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Shady Grove Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries. The decedent was identified as a 61-year-old female from Gaithersburg.

The name of the deceased will be released following proper notification of family. This is an active and ongoing investigation.

The Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) continues to investigate this collision. Anyone with information regarding this collision is asked to contact CRU detectives at 240-773-6620.
