2:46pm UPDATE from MCPD: Bethesda-Chevy Chase HS will dismiss students at the regular time. MCPD will remain on scene during dismissal.
The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) shared the following information regarding police presence at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School at 2:29pm on Thursday: “There is currently a police presence at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School for what appears to be a swatting call at the school. MCPS has not placed the school on lockdown.”
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in connection with the armed robbery of a United States Postal Service letter carrier earlier this month here in Montgomery County.
The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) has arrested 67-year-old Alejandro Ceferino Zunca of Montgomery Village for impersonating a police officer and driving a vehicle marked and equipped to resemble a police cruiser. (more…)

The Maryland Office of the Comptroller reported that the state collected over $18.4 million in cannabis sales tax revenue between April and June 2025, with the largest share coming from the Central Region, and noted that the tax rate increased from 9% to 12% on July 1, 2025, under the Budget Reconciliation and Financing Act. MCPS has shared that the Auto Dealer Education Institute (ADEI) recognized 25 automotive technician apprentices, including 15 from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), during an Aug. 28 ceremony at Montgomery College. According to MCPS, the event brought together graduates, their families, local dealers, community partners and local representatives to celebrate the achievements of these future industry leaders. The event also welcomed a new class of apprentices beginning their training this fall.

The property that houses Pines of Rome, a Bethesda dining landmark with more than five decades of history, has been listed for sale with an asking price of $3.75 million. Located at 4918 Cordell Avenue, the freestanding building offers 4,012 square feet of space on a 5,250-square-foot lot. A representative from The Restaurant Broker, which is handling the listing, tells us the sale is due to Chef/Owner Marco Troiano’s plan to retire.
It has now been 20 years since Tristan Courtland Turner disappeared, and his case remains unsolved. Turner, who was 22 at the time, was last seen on August 20, 2005, leaving his home in Montgomery Village, Maryland, to travel to Baltimore. He never returned and has not been heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, Turner was driving a borrowed black 2002 Honda Civic Del Sol with Maryland license plates.

A significant collision occurred this morning on the eastbound lanes of MD200 (ICC) between New Hampshire Avenue and Route 29. The incident involved a pedestrian in the highway work zone, causing immediate response from several emergency services.
