I-270

11:05am Update: All lanes of northbound I-270 at MD-109 (Old Hundred Rd) have reopened. Expect residual delays.

Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes following a severe traffic incident that has closed all lanes of northbound I-270 near MD-109 (Old Hundred Road). According to Alert Montgomery at 7:07am Wednesday morning, the incident is expected to cause significant delays in the area.

Last year, Atlantic Union and Olney-based Sandy Spring Bank announced that they entered into a definitive merger agreement for Atlantic Union to acquire Sandy Spring in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The acquisition was completed on April 1st and the combination of the two organizations created the largest regional bank headquartered in the lower Mid-Atlantic. Now, Atlantic Union has shared that Sandy Spring Bank will officially make the change to Atlantic Union this October.

After being ranked 14th in its population group out of more than 17,000 participating communities worldwide last year, Olney’s National Night Out is back and bigger than ever for its 30th anniversary. Hosted by the Olney Chamber of Commerce, this beloved community event takes place on Tuesday, August 5, from 5 to 8 p.m. in the parking lots of The Fair Hill Shops and Olney Village Center.

The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration has announced the start of construction on Maryland’s first Pedestrian Safety Action Plan project– $15 million in pedestrian, bicycle and multi-modal improvements along nearly 2.5 miles of MD 650 (New Hampshire Avenue) from University Boulevard to Powder Mill Road in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties.

Attorney General Anthony G. Brown and a coalition of state attorneys general submitted formal objections to the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposal to eliminate efficiency standards for 16 appliances, arguing the rollbacks lack required analysis and would increase consumer costs.

Montgomery College

Montgomery College’s MBI Cafe internship program will host its culminating event on Wednesday, July 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Services building lobby on the Rockville campus. The event marks the final project for students participating in the Summer RISE internship, who have spent several weeks learning about socially responsible business practices through the MBI Cafe’s “Triple Bottom Line” approach, which emphasizes profit, people, and planet.

Crime

During the eighth week of Montgomery County’s Summer Traffic Task Force, officers conducted 88 traffic stops resulting in 13 DUI arrests and one criminal arrest, with additional citations and warnings issued; since the task force began, there have been 110 DUI arrests and nearly 2,200 combined citations and warnings. These figures reflect only task force activity and do not include DUI arrests made by regular patrol officers. (more…)
