A light snow event is expected to move into the region on Friday, with the potential to begin by mid-morning and continue through the evening. Temperatures will be cold enough for any snow that falls to accumulate, and while this is not expected to be a major storm, it could bring the first inch of snow of the season to parts of the area.

Montgomery County Public Schools issued a community-wide apology on Tuesday after announcing a two hour delay at 4:55am (with the text to the community coming at approximately 5:01am), a decision that left many families scrambling to adjust morning plans. In a letter sent to all MCPS households, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor acknowledged the widespread frustration surrounding the timing of the call and the handling of before-school childcare.

Montgomery County Public Schools says it is closely monitoring weather conditions as a mix of freezing rain, light snow, and rain is expected to move into the region late Monday night into Tuesday morning. In an update shared Monday evening, the school system noted that while early predictions call for slick conditions early in the day, the system currently expects to operate on a normal schedule for Tuesday, December 2.


With a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for parts of Maryland and Northern Virginia, including northwest Montgomery County, attention has shifted squarely to the morning commute and the possibility of school delays or closures across the region and FOX5 meteorologist Mike Thomas has provided a prediction.

The National Weather Service (NWS) expanded its Winter Weather Advisory to include northwest Montgomery County as the region braces for the first widespread winter event of the season. The advisory is in effect from 3am to 1pm Tuesday, with a wintry mix expected that could cause hazardous travel conditions during the morning commute, but not much at all is expected for the immediate DC Metro area. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of north-central and northern Maryland, as well as parts of the West Virginia Panhandle and Northern Virginia. As of now, Montgomery County is not included, but forecasters note that adjustments to the advisory area remain possible as the storm approaches.
