Chick Fil A, located at 825 Ellsworth Dr Lot D1-A in Downtown Silver Spring, will temporarily close today (January 28th) for renovations. An employee confirmed the temporary closure and stated that the store will likely reopen in May.
Sangfroid Distilling, a small artisan distillery focused on fruit-based brandies, rye whiskey, and dutch-style gins, has received its permit to build out its expanded location in Takoma Park.
On August 22, the New Neighbor Interfaith Alliance (NNIA) will host the 2026 Set Them Up for Success Volleyball Tournament and Family Fun Day from 9 am-4 pm at the Interdenominational Church of God in Gaithersburg, gathering volleyball teams, faith community members, and the public to raise funds to help recent refugees in Montgomery County attain independence.
An interfaith non-profit alliance of 37 faith communities and civic groups, NNIA raises funds to help resettled refugees with rental assistance, deferred medical care, English language skills and job placement. They also hope to expand their volunteer numbers to help more beneficiaries with job assistance, reliable transportation, and mentoring.

Montgomery County Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Natali Fani-González announced the “More Housing N.O.W.” package, a comprehensive plan to address the county’s housing crisis by increasing workforce housing, converting vacant office spaces into homes, and expanding homeownership programs. The package aims to provide affordable housing for middle-class workers, including teachers, firefighters, and healthcare professionals, while focusing on building housing along key corridors without changing zoning in residential neighborhoods.

Montgomery County launched its Climate Smart Campaign to encourage residents to take small, climate-friendly actions in areas such as food, transportation, energy, and emergency preparedness, with the slogan “BIG CHANGE starts small.” The campaign includes a pledge residents can take to commit to reducing their carbon footprint and aligns with the County’s Climate Action Plan goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2027 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2035. An Extreme Cold Alert and Wind Advisory has been issued for Montgomery. The cold alert goes from 7:00 pm Tuesday, 01/28 until 9:00 am Wednesday, 01/29 while the wind advisory is in effect from 11am-6pm on Wednesday.
Yesterday we reported that Montgomery County’s last remaining Jerry’s Subs & Pizza (8517 Colesville Rd. Silver Spring, MD) will close permanently on Friday, January 31st, based on two phone call conversations with the store. Today, several readers have shared they tried making one last trip and the restaurant was already closed. One reader stated he spoke with employees who were inside and was told the restaurant closed earlier than expected. Phone calls made to Jerry’s were not answered Tuesday afternoon.
