Per WMATA: Metro’s Headquarters Building at L’Enfant Plaza has been certified as LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council, the highest certification achievable in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program and a testament to the transit agency’s commitment to sustainability.
The building design and construction were both certified under LEED® Version 4, stringent requirements for energy reduction and material selection. Metro Headquarters is one of only two Version 4 projects to have received this certification in Washington, D.C., and one of only 13 projects to receive LEED® Platinum certification for Building Design and Construction in Washington, D.C., all versions considered.
The building received a perfect score of 100 on the ENERGY STAR scale. This perfect score contributed towards the overall certification process.
“Sustainability and talented teams are two of Metro’s pillars in the strategic transformation plan,” said Metro General Manager and Chief Executive Officer Randy Clarke. “This certification shows that our new headquarters will deliver benefits for the environment and employees for decades to come.”
With convenient access to public transit through the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station, buses, and VRE stations, Metro encourages the use of public transportation to reduce emissions and congestion. Metro is more energy-efficient than cars, and every trip taken with public transportation instead of a car reduces greenhouse gas emissions and helps ensure clean air in the region.
Some unique features of Metro Headquarters include:
  • An extraordinary amount of access to natural daylight, improving employee satisfaction, productivity, and health.
  • State-of-the-art air filtration and fresh air circulation systems, supporting a healthy work environment.
  • Energy-saving automatic daylight sensor lighting and controls, maximizing energy efficiency, and lowering costs.
  • Access to outdoor spaces including a green roof and a fitness center, benefiting mental and physical health.
  • Waste and recycling management, encouraging recycling and supporting waste diversion. Cooling tower water reuse and water bottle filling stations on every floor- providing filtered water for employees and encouraging the use of reusable water bottles.
Metro’s Headquarters Building also has onsite secure bicycle storage and electric vehicle charging stations to support decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. The project included all of the critical elements of high-performance building design, focusing on energy reduction and indoor air quality, along with the selective choice of materials and water reduction.
Vital to Metro’s success was a comprehensive optimization energy study conducted early in the process to ensure that the key systems — HVAC, curtain wall glazing, exterior wall insulation, and lighting power density – were designed to meet our long-term operating goals to reduce energy consumption through the integration of these systems.
Metro Headquarters joins 11 other LEED®-certified Metro projects, with seven additional projects underway.
Award-winning art
Two art installations commissioned by Metro’s Art in Transit program – including the installations at Metro’s Headquarters Building – recently received prestigious CODAawards International Merit Awards, which recognize collaborations that result in outstanding projects that successfully integrate commissioned art into interior, architectural, or public spaces.
“Aura, Hooray, and Pebble” by Hou de Sousa, three artworks at Metro’s Headquarters Building, won the CODAaward in the Institutional category. The installations create a dynamic entrance for Metro employees and visitors, and enhances the broader L’Enfant Plaza neighborhood.
“Dawn and Dusk Resurgent” by Heidi Lippman, located at Metro’s New Carrollton Office Building, won Collaboration of the Year. The installation, located on the plaza facing the office building, is a mosaic mural composed of hand cast and manufactured glass and stone originally used for the creation of “Dawn and Dusk,” art created for the New Carrollton parking garage. “Dawn and Dusk Resurgent” is an example of sustainability through the use of collected, salvaged, and upcycled material and adaptive creative process.
“We’re thrilled to receive international recognition for two art installations that enhance the experience of Metro employees, customers, and the community we serve,” said Laurent Odde, Metro’s Art in Transit program manager. “These award-winning pieces embody Metro’s goals to support talented teams, regional partnerships, and sustainability, and we congratulate the artists on this well-deserved recognition.”

Massage Envy at 20950 Frederick Rd in the Neelsville Village Center in Germantown has permanently closed. The store is redirecting its members to the Gaithersburg Massage Envy location at 127 Crown Park Ave in Downtown Crown.  According to signage posted on the front door, the store never fully recovered after the COVID-19 pandemic.  Massage Envy offers massages, stretch therapy, and facials, and has additional Montgomery County locations in Rockville and Silver Spring.

“Hello Valued Massage Envy Member,
Thank you for being a loyal member of the independently owned and operated Germantown
Massage Envy franchised location, which was temporarily closed in 2020 as a result of the Coronavirus
(COVID-19) crisis in an effort to protect the health and wellbeing of the community. Unfortunately, even
though we reopened after the temporary closure and now have been open for more than a couple of years,
we have made the difficult decision to permanently close, as we never fully recovered. As a valued member,
we want to make sure you understand your options.”

Following last night’s varsity football game at Bethesda-Chevy Chase (B-CC) High School between B-CC and Walter Johnson, a fight between students broke out at the nearby Bethesda Metro Station which resulted in serious student injuries. The principals of those schools released the following community message on Saturday afternoon:

“Dear Members of the Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda Chevy-Chase High School Communities,
This is a joint message from the principals of Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High Schools.

Last night, Friday, September 1, B-CC hosted Walter Johnson for our first football game of the fall season. The game went well and was an exciting match. Our fans and attendees were great and everyone seemed to have a fun evening. The safety plans jointly made by both schools worked well on campus and all of the fans left school grounds safely.

Unfortunately, after the game there was a large gathering at the Bethesda Metro Station by many B-CC and Walter Johnson students. This gathering turned into fighting, which then resulted in some serious student injuries. This is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

There is also a mention on social media that a student may have been in possession of a weapon, this has not been confirmed and remains a part of the investigation.
The Montgomery County Police Department was engaged immediately and responded.

They are currently investigating this incident as are the school administrators. These behaviors by students are dangerous, illegal and completely inappropriate. As individual students from both schools are identified appropriate disciplinary action, in alignment with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct, will be assigned.
We will be sending more information out to our communities as the administrations from both schools work collaboratively with MCPS security, MCPS athletics and the Montgomery County police to complete the investigation and to help repair the harm that has been done. Together we must help our students understand how such disruptive actions impact our community.

We appreciate the support from our parents and guardians in helping us emphasize to students that their safety is always our priority, and that they play a critical role keeping our school events safe and fun for everyone.
Sincerely, Shelton Mooney
Principal, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

Jennifer Baker
Principal, Walter Johnson”

The Maryland Lottery has announced that Montgomery County’s first sportsbook is now open at Sports & Social (11800 Grand Park Ave) in Pike & Rose. Sports & Social opened in August 2021 and describes itself as a “premier dining, entertainment, sports viewing, and social concept located in high-profile entertainment and lifestyle districts, world-class casino resort destinations, and at the front door of professional sports stadiums around the country.” Additional details below.

The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) today issued a sports wagering facility license to Whitman Gaming, Inc., and its operator partner FanDuel, for a retail sportsbook operating at Sports & Social in North Bethesda.

On Aug. 29 and Aug. 31, Whitman Gaming and FanDuel successfully completed controlled demonstrations at Sports & Social. Customers participated in live wagering as Maryland Lottery and Gaming staff ensured that the sportsbook complied with all required procedures and that its systems functioned properly.

Sports & Social in North Bethesda becomes the 12th retail sportsbook location to open in Maryland. The other 11 are:

In Fiscal Year 2023 (July 1, 2022 through June 30, 2023), sports wagering contributed $25,258,639 to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which supports public education programs. An additional $2,091,753 in expired sports wagering prizes were paid to the Maryland Problem Gambling Fund, which supports responsible gambling programs, including no-cost counseling for Maryland residents.

True Respite Brewing Company’s last day in operation is today, September 2, 2023. True Respite owners Brendan and Bailey O’Leary opened up shop at 7301 Calhoun Place Suite 600 in Rockville in 2018 and the brewery made a name for itself in the local beer community by winning multiple Maryland Craft Beer Awards and hosting community events. The taproom is open today from 12-9pm and Steeze Burger’s will be there beginning at 2pm. Featured image courtesy of True Respite on Facebook.

True Respite posted the following message on their social media accounts last month:
“Today is a day we hoped would never come. After almost 5 1/2 years of community, pints, and adventure, True Respite’s journey is coming to a close. Our last day in operation will be Saturday, September 2nd.

We couldn’t possibly capture all that has occurred, all it has meant to us, and all those involved in a single social media post. But one thing is clear: none of this would have happened if it weren’t for the love and passion of every single person involved.

Our gratitude to our staff, our customers, our peers, our friends, and especially our families knows no bounds. The people around us so constantly and so willingly gave all they could to try to create something worthwhile, meaningful, and memorable. We take some solace in feeling that together, we’ve achieved just that.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for supporting us.
More details on the final weeks to come.”
